I just seen this movie yesterday. Both my girlfriend and I thought it was a huge disappointment.
I'm a Burton fan, and I'd rate this as his second worse film, behind only the abhorrent Planet of the Apes.

It's even more unimpressive now, because it grossed $34 million in it's third weekend. That's good, but Avatar did $36 million in it's sixth weekend. This just proves how non-impressive this movie's opening is in the long run.

Non-impressive?
It had the sixth best opening weekend of all time.
It had the fifth best second weekend of all time.
And it had the sixth third weekend of all time.
It's maintaining itself while most people thought it wouldn't have any legs.

It's putting up good numbers, but since you put Avatar in the title, it's only fair to compare the two. You made it sound like this film did so much better than Avatar, and that's true, but only during opening weekend. Avatar had legs. This movie won't have as long of legs. It's dropping fast, and will even more this coming weekend when "How to train your Dragon" steals a good amount of the 3D screens away from Alice, and probably the few remaining ones that Avatar is still in.
