Forums - Sony - PS3 video streaming always pausing/buffering

Maybe so, however as someone who works in IT, I call that a work around not a solution. I have a media server that works on 3 other devices perfectly but the PS3 doesn't. Running my streaming from the NAS to a PC to the PS3 is ridiculous when I should just be able to go direct.

Oh...you're one of those.. I feel dirty.

I dunno man. You should check some more technical sites. We aren't exactly known as being patronized by techies.

wait...so you can stream video just fine, but you want to be able to stream with the media server function? Just use it the way it works.

I can stream Divx fine to the TV using it's build in decoder
I can stream everything perfectly to the Netgear EVA2000 in the bedroom
I cannot stream any decent quality MP4 or H264 through the PS3 without stuttering and pauses to buffer. It's not the end of the world, I now avoid these types of files. However it would be nice if it worked as it should

oo I also have problems with those types of files sometimes. PS3 doesn't support everything, and has trouble even with some of the things that it does support (sometimes)

Am I doing something wrong, or need to change some settings here.

I have a 4TB RAID5 NAS unit with built in media server at my house which is accessed using 4 devices, my PS3, my Samsung LED TV (which has built in Divx and wireless), my Netgear EVA2000 and my laptop. Every single device connects to the NAS wirelessly and every single unit runs flawlessly... except the PS3. Whenever I play a movie through the PS3 it stops every 3-5 mins to buffer for a few seconds.

Now normally I wouldn't use the PS3, however it can play more formats than the TV and it can pause the movie which the TV can't. The Netgear media streaming device is in the bedroom (which is even further away from the WAP) and I don't want to have to move it into the living room just to play certain movies.

Its not like I'm trying to play MKV Bluray rips here, just 1.4-2GB DivX and H264. Surely the PS3 has better functionality than this.

Dude, if I had your setup, I could die a happy man. That or Kim Kardashian, whichever works.

While the Samsung TV is a bit of a luxury, the Lacie 5Big NAS and Netgear EVA2000 aren't that expensive.

To be honest the Lacie NAS is ok but I wouldn't want to use it for anything that requires decent transfer speed via wired LAN. It's cheap for what you get so I'm happy with it as a media box over wireless. Hope it doesn't die on me though as backing up that much data isn't easy.

I know that the PS3 has problems when streaming MP4 video, but Divx usually works better. Theres also some unexplainable stuff going on when files are transcoded on the fly. Also check so your connection dont have a "bottleneck" and that it dosent run any other applications in the background.

The best way, and i hate it since im a big fan if wireless, is to connect the PS3 directly to the NAS with a cord.. if possible.

do you by any chance use a wireless router without simultaneous support for n and g wifi? if so, the router will operate in g mode as soon as the ps3 is connected and hence, issues as described can occur. try wiring your ps3 to your network.

Wireless router is G only, not N
I consider wiring it via Ethernet a workaround, not a solution
It works fine on all other devices wirelessly, so why not the PS3?

Seems to be the same problem with DivX files too, unless its about 700Mb for a movie then it stutters, 1.4Gb and it's almost unwatchable.
