Forums - Sony Discussion - Heavy Rain prediction fail

Because, my mum told me to buy it after I showed her the demo.

This is a person who doesn't even like the Wii that much.

You're asking why it's selling better than Lair and The Conduit? Well, did you ever think that maybe Heavy Rain is a great game and those other games suck?

If it has legs, perhaps, but just the opening week alone doesn't show whether people like the game or they bought it because of the marketing.

And that is important. Call of Duty games since 4 have strong legs compared to other HD system games, showing people like those games. So the same would have to happen to prove the game has appeal. Otherwise we have another big opener flashpan.

Note I'm stating it could go either way, just that it's too soon to assume what most sold the game until it does.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

How often are new IP's frontloaded though? A game like this you'd expect to have a modest opening and claw its way to respectable sales over time. But this is pretty impressive. It shows people are after something new.

This.

I don't have the slightest bit of interest in Heavy Rain, but even I can tell it'll be great for those who are into that type of thing.  Hell, my boss, a guy who plays little more than Call of Duty and Madden, absolutely loved the game.

I'm making this topic because people shouldn't hide when they make as big a fail as I have with their predictions.

My signature, for a few months (until 5 minutes ago), read 'Heavy Rain to sell less than The Conduit lifetime'. Clearly that prediction was far too low.

My question is, why? It is not an entertaining game in the traditional sense; it emphasises graphics and narrative over the fun/surprise/wonder that successful games usually have; it sells to a niche demographic compared to the 'mass market'. I would have thought The Conduit had more market appeal (as an accessible and intutive FPS game) than this. The Conduit possibly had even more media exposure too, and no big 'mature' Wii games to compete against (whereas the 360 and PS3 have plenty of choice in that area).

Why didn't this flop, as Lair did, or any other game which was hyped to death, focused on graphics over content, and essentially was the exact opposite of why Wii and 'casual' games are doing so well?

you really have no clue do you? the market for heavy rain is the same as anyone who loves point and click adventure games, and adventure games period.

I'm sorry!  I played the demo, and... and I was bored!  ;_;

I think I predicted 1.5 million LTD. Considering It's already sold 500k+ In It's first week I'm glade to say I will be eating some tastey crow.

It's just that simple.

That's a shame too, but we knew it wouldn't be for everyone.

I will be giving the full chance, though.  I mean, if even my boss liked it... 0_o
