Yeah, but then you'd be hairy and wouldn't live as long.

that may be true, but i wouldn't care. i'd get away with not eating vegetables, promiscuity would be expected (according to the article in the OP) and hey, i'd finally fit in with all the other geeks on this forum eh?

Oooh, touche!! But since when would fitting in with the rest of us be fun?? The grass might not be greener on the other side. And it could be especially hairy.
FYI, the survey was done in England.
In the US, the opposite may be true when in regards to political ideology. More republicans have higher education than democrats :-p
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Well I guess that education doesn't do them much good.

Holy crap, I'm both liberal and an atheist I feel so smart.
Seriously, though all keep my post modest because I know this topic could get me banned (easily).
I am not surprised by this at all for one most atheists probably are educated and think about religion a lot, they don't just blindly follow what their society and culture tells them are truths. So they probably often look for their own answers on what their own worldview is. They might do research, read philosophy or study objective science. Secondly, most people in the US who are not associated with religion (It is RISING!!!) claim to be just "Not Religous" and not atheists or agnostics. The average nonreligous person might not have a higher IQ it might only be the same as theists. I would have to see the actual research paper.
Note that most scientific research reported by the media is blown out of proportion, and cut and pasted to make the story interesting. Just look at all the mothers playing baby Einstein for there children a phenomenon that was seen after the media started reporting that babies IQ's were shown to be higher when they were played the music each day. BULLSHIT!!! It turns out that the research only ONCE showed a very modest increases on test performance in "college students" who listened to classical music for 15-20 before taking a test. As compared to a control group of no music, and other kinds of music played. Once again this was hardly significant statistically and it was done on college students not babies. The study has never been replicated, yet the media reports lies and says playing classical music for your child will increase his IQ. The lesson I take from this is go directly to the source, read the research and draw your own conclusions. Sounds to me like something a reasonable intelligent person would do. To be skeptical, is the job of an intelligent person and it is taught by professors and teachers throughout the scholarly world. Science teaches us to be skeptical.
On liberalism and intelligence, I believe if you look at conservative states you will find a higher rate of obesity and lower IQ. If you look at a liberal state like California and to some extent Colorado (you will find healthier individuals (greater exercise and lower obesity rates) that are liberal and have higher IQ's. I should look up the data on intelligence per region in the United States, but I'm fairly positive there would be higher intelligence rates in healthier more liberal regions.
Danm, I didn't know the surveywas from England, still very interesting.

Atheism makes perfect sense. People who are more educated are more likely to be atheist, in the very least they are more exposed to physics, chemisty, biology, and so forth that provide differing views on 'religious' answers.
| TheRealMafoo said: @tarheel91 I have a much simpler answer as why many of the educated are liberal. Education is hard, and if your an elitist, the more education you achieve, and the easier life becomes, the more you think others can't obtain what you have, because not everyone can be as smart/good as you. To be an educated wealthy liberal, first you must think your better then those who you want to give resources too. I am a well educated man who thinks I am no better then the next guy, so if the next guy wants the advantages I have, he needs to go get them, just like I did. Just my 2 cents. |
Thats a funny way of thinking. From your logic, conservatives think that they are better than people below them so thet don't deserve rights, whereas liberals think that people below them do deserve rights. Still, I dont see how a liberal idea, such as letting women vote, is wrong because women should earn the right for themselves.
The actual answer for why educated people are more liberal is qutie simple. The more educated you are the more likely you are exposed to be exposed to other cultures and ideas. An educated man meets different types of people at his university, is introduced to many ideas in his studies, and has more money and reason to travel and encoutner differing ideas and cultures. An uneducated person does have these opportunities, and thus is more likely to give more weight to the ideas of his original social community.

Your idea that higher education exposes people to differant cultures and ideas is a good one. Many colleges in the United states are dominated by liberal thinking. I even go to a very Conservative college and I am still required to take courses that promote greater understanding of the world outside of the US. I am taught by molstly liberal professors who influence me and my other fellow students with there libral ideas. Mostly, like caring about the enviornment, accepatance of differant cultures, genders, races and sexuality. You wont see this in other places, like some young man working construction instead of going to school. Higher education in my experience definantly has a liberal bias, even at a not so liberal school.

Not sure how you derived the opposite from my post. Explain how what I said means I think anyones better?
My post just points out the human flaw in people, that when they achieve something, many think that there accomplishments are somehow because of who they are, and not what they did. Along with pride comes a sense that "I just accomplished something other people can't"
That's not true. 99.999% of the time you just accomplished something other people did not put forth the effort to accomplish.
If you think others don't have the ability to achieve what you achieved, then it makes sense to provide for them additional resources for there shortcomings. If you think they are just as good as you, but only lack the drive, then there are no amount of resources in the world that will give then what they need.
And by the way, undoing the injustice that is denying all people the right to vote, is not a liberal idea. It's a human rights idea, and one all Americans should agree with.
Funny how you worded it "letting woman vote".
