the game has its bells and whistles for the online aspect of it. but there's not really any story other than doing a bunch of random quests while grouped. at thier core a good rpg should in my opinion center around a sweeping well told story, this game (while like I said has some interesting aspects to it) fails horribly in the story telling. that alone imho makes me say the game fails. maybe not epic failure..but failure nontheless.

I agree the story really never got going.  There were some entertaining scenes, and a few moments when I thought things were going to get interesting, but there were also some dissapointing and cringe worthy moments.  I did enjoy exploring the world though, I'd say it's one of the three most colorful and fun fantasy worlds created so far this generation (Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles being above it).

In terms of the online not having any story, there really aren't many rpgs that let you play through the whole story in coop, let alone with four players online.  Many of us are willing to just take a good multiplayer RPG when we can get one, whether or not it manages to do what almost no game has ever done before and allows you to play through a whole epic story online.  (And when games do do that, it usually sucks anyway, because everyone just runs through everything and skips all the dialog and cutscenes.)

There are enough quests in the multiplayer that it could practically be a seperate game, and the gameplay is more fun than a lot of MMOs, and less time-consuming.  The two biggest disadvantages to the mutiplayer are:

1.) You have to unlock areas in singleplayer to do quests in them in multiplayer, so if you want to do all the quests you have to explore the full world map in single player.

2.) The game takes too long to get to the point where you are really challenged as a party.  You basically have to spend five or six hours grinding through really easy quests before the multiplayer starts getting challenging.  (Once the multiplayer gets challenging, the game becomes a lot more fun.)

I find the game fun enough play wise to brave the story in small intervals. I really have to admit though, the one line "IMPOSSIBLE HOW CAN THIS BE" and cesar chimes in with "because I just busted your ass" I had to put the game down for about 2 weeks before I could stomache picking it up again.
The game is really fun the early quests multiplayer wise are really easy but not really doable as a caster solo. Still they are fun nontheless.
As far as storyline in a game that allows you to play multiplayer through the single game, yes alot of games fail at this, but games like diablo do pretty well of course once you've gone through it then it becomes a how fast can I clear this whole level and get phatter lootz grind. but initially you do read through the story and it wasn't a bad one IMHO.
I suppose i'm being too quick to judge the game, but to also try to make us pay for an avatar makeover is stupid. it might very well do this as im not sure of all the details but if it actually did allow you to respec your character points then perhaps its worth it but to pay 5 bucks for just a cosmetic customization when this should have been provided free is just trying to milk the game IMO.
anyway just my take on the whole thing.
