Forums - Sony Discussion - no need for a PS4?

what? ever?

what a ridiculous statement

of course there will be a 4... so they are going to say, skip 4... 3 is just that good... the next PS is the PS5!?

I presume they meant that the ps3 will go up againt the next wii and next xbox. So the PS3 will have to compete for 2 gens?... then... well.. I guess sony better prepare to be slaughtered.

yeah, there are so many things to improve upon. We all thought ps2 was perfect until we saw fight night on 360. Fight Night really launched the next generation and it will be no different this coming generation. Granted, I wish the generations took a little longer, but it seems like each company wants to blow the doors off the hinges first.

It is a very solid machine, wouldn't MS and Nintendo be playing catch up in terms of hardware performance?

Whatever Nintendo puts out in 2-3 years could easily outdo the PS3 even at a $250 price point. If Microsoft follows a similar path as it did before (think powerful console), then it will destroy the PS3s capabilities at $400.

Heck, the PS3 (nor X360) really even do HD. Most games are rendered below 720p and then upscalled before output, and very few games can even manage 1080p. The next round of systems should be able to easily do 1080p with almost every game.

Besides the technical differences of the systems, the PS3 will be well into decline mode and won't be able to support sales. Looking at the past only the market leader has successfully stayed on the market once the next generation begins. 3rd parties will move on and won't support the PS3 as they'll be busy supporting the current market leader (Wii) and the newer real HD systems.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

IMO there's no need for a PS4 for a very long time to come. Core technical reasons Blu-Ray and the Cell processor.

Game engines can be greatly improved on further taking better advantage of the above mentioned technologies, the firmware must be improved gradually as well and maybe some hardware redesigns with new default features would be nice. But the core technology is very solid for a very long time to come.

PS3 vs 360 sales

These workers apparently don't know that the GPU in the 360 is more powerful than the one in the PS3. Also, the PC puts both systems to shame so yeah, there is room for improvement.

No I'm just not sure Sony can afford another gen.

sony wont leave gaming,  it would damage the brand massively.

More is of course always better, but RAM speed is just as important and limits the amount of RAM needed (the faster data is being moved around and processed, the less one has to rely on more RAM). Look at the Neo Geo's RAM for example, with its very limited amount of RAM for its time yet superior games. Limited RAM also sparks developers to be more efficient, which as a side effect often results into much faster code as well. Large amounts of RAM is mainly important for processing the graphics and audio data which are streamed from disc, this streaming performance and the capacity I actually consider more of importance for a console and for most games a lot can be improved in software with regard to that.

Naughty Dog at this point feels as if the PS3 provides a bottomless pit of processing potential. Guerilla games have shown there's enormous potential to make improvement for Killzone 3. The Heavy Rain developers said they would be able to much better still with regard to their next project, etc. They make the most impressive games available on the market today.

i agree. I think the next the gen consoles will be nearly identical in terms of graphical power. It will come down to preference really in games and  brand loyalty.
