Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Red Steel 2 Preview - it's all about the gameplay

Looks like RedSteel 2 will be enough to replace WSR showdown. Now Namco need to get their act together and replace WSR duel with an M+ Soul Calibur.

Watch what you ask for.  We might get another Soul Calibur Legends....

Crap, you're right. They'll try and copy RS2 success with Legends instead of a 1-on-1 fighter. LucasArts is our only hope.

Well Force Unleashed 2 is already announced.   But will it use WM+?? (And Arc and Natal?)

My concern is repetition. 1:1 sword fighting is cool, but will get boring quick unless you have to use skill, brains and reflexes. Even then, it'll get tiring before long.

The same thing with pushing buttons for hours and hours and hours.

I saw no mention of motion control, he's talking about the gameplay. Either way i'd rather push buttons for hours and hours than waggle for hours and hours.

Either way, you have to keep mixing things up or it'll get stale.   My concern, perhaps unjustified, is they are relying too heavily on novelty and not making an overall entertaining game.   But we'll see one the reviews start coming in.

I'm guessing yes, yes and no. Although it will be a real slap in the face to see the PS3 get the first real lightsabre game at the same time as the Wii. It might even get the bigger focus.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

If FU2 doesn't use it they might as well stop making the game now. Waiting for Arc and doing a multiplat release makes sense. I don't see how Natal can do the sword but who knows.

That still leaves somebody to make a 1on1 fighter. Somebody needs to do it and Soul Calibur makes the most sense. It even has Yoda and Vader.

The difference between pressing a button becoming repetitive and slashing a sword is that there are about 360 ways of slashing a sword.

I don't see that at all. My problem with most brawlers, is that while they continually add variety and flash, the underlying gameplay isn't much fun in the first place. The underlying mechanics of Red Steel 2 are fun in themselves, and there's no reason why it should hold the game back from having variety at the same time. And if you look through the videos we've seen so far, we've seen plenty of different kinds of enemies. Various different early goons with different weapons and styles, then there are ninjas which once again vary, and there are bosses, and that's just the limited stuff we've seen so far. There's no reason to think this is going to end up like No More Heroes where you just trudge through the same goons over and over, though even if it somehow did the underlying gameplay would still make it more fun.

It would be a slap in the face for Wii owners.  But it would be more epic on PS3 thanks to HD and processing power and would only make sense for LucasArts to release it on every available system now since they can.    Had the timing been different WM+ might have gotten to SWCW:Lightsaber Duels or the original FU but now it'll likely go to all simultaneously.

I have a friend that for years has said he'd get a Wii if a Jedi game came out with 1:1 lightsaber action, I bet he's not the only one.   I just wonder if he'd still get  a Wii with WM+ or pay the addition $$ for PS3 + Eyetoy + Arc.
