Who cares about the fact that your mother or grandma or pet iguana can finally get into gaming?! You think the industry cares? You think your mom sits around playing videogames for hours a week and makes sure to always visit Gamestop when she goes to the mall?!

Ask yourself that.

It wasn't long ago that most moms and grandmas didn't even care about video games.

Today some do.

Nothing changes overnight but the Wii is slowly changing things.

Those moms and grandamas may not be visiting gamestop today, but tomorrow... who can say.
By then the Wii's lifespan will be over.

Because the strategy proving fruitful on the DS magically won't work on the Wii.

Pretty much.

Sorry, but that won't prove the Wii will fail. You have to tell us WHY the Wii won't suceed where the DS did.

Gameboy: Approximately 120 million

GBA: 80 milion+

DS: 55 million and growing

N64: 32 million

GC: 21 million

Wii: 14 million

Gameboy: Approximately 120 million That's 70 million for the Gameboy, and 50 million for the Gameboy Color. This is an important distinction, since the GB took ten years to reach that 70, and the GBC took just 4 to reach its 50.

GBA: 80 milion+

DS: 55 million and growing

N64: 32 million

GC: 21 million

Wii: 14 million and growing  Did you "forget" to add that?

That is blatant cheating to "prove" the Wii will fail. The DS has been around for three times as long as the Wii.

Yes, it's so blatant, and I would have gotten away with it too were it not for you meddling kids!

I said the DS was still growing because it's selling at a phenomenal rate. The Wii is selling fast but not at the crazy level the DS is.

Hell, I could have put that the Gamecube was still selling, because it technically is.

Do you mean sales of the DS now, or sales of the DS in its first year?

Now.

See, I like things simple.

Oh, now I see what you're going to say. Interesting.

Give the Wii a couple more years. If it sells less than 40 million, then I would say it's not doing as well as the DS.

Sorry whoever doesn't want bad analogies.

You are in a room with about 25 people but it is filled. You are getting a lot of attention. There is renovations to the room and it is made larger and 80 more people come in. Do you have less attention now? Yes. But have you ceased to exist? No.

Stop complaining that the Wii is ruining gaming.

NES: 60 million

Gameboy (and Game Boy Color combined): Approximately 120 million

SNES: 50 million

N64: 32 million

GBA: 80 milion+

GC: 21 million

DS: 55 million and growing than anything ever

Wii: 14 million and growing than anything but the DS

There fixed it. You left out the NES and the SNES because they were too successful, and you changed the order to show a constant downward trend that isn't there.

Oh oops. I got distracted with another thread and this conversation moved on without me. Well, meh.

Did you all read the article though? I thought it was a pretty good analysis. Amount of buttons aside, most controllers scare non-gamers and the Wii controller doesn't. That's the whole revolution right there.

They tried it with the GameCube, one giant fat green (means go) button, and some baby buttons around it, and it still scared non-gamers. But instead of giving up they went 10x more simple with the next controller and now anybody can use it.

Making the Wii and its remote shaped like a DVD player and a TV remote were genius. It was the same brilliant strategy behind making the NES and its weird loading dock shaped like a crappy VCR. Games scare people in general. TV doesn't. Make it look like an innocent TV game thing, and people will gobble it up. It's working again.
