Forums - Gaming - How the Videogame Industry Shot Itself In the Joystick--and Why the Wii Has Stopped the Bleeding

It's not selling as fast as the DS primarily because the DS has had 3 yrs to gather developer support, consumer interest, price advantages, and ramped up production.

Wii hasn't had any price drops, colors, or modified bundles.

Wii is still out of stock in many areas going into the holidays so the production hasn't been adequate for demand yet.

Developers still think its too early to jump on Wii's ship.

Wii is in a similar position that the DS was a year into its lifespan after Nintendogs took off.  Sure they are on slightly different tracks, Wii is selling a lot better than the DS at this point in its lifespan, but to compare the Wii at a year into its life to the DS at 3 yrs into its life and declare the Wii not as successful is completely absurd.

That being said, what's ruining gaming is people sitting around being philosophical about (pardon my language) fucking video games instead of playing them.

To that "philosophical" comment: Obviously you are trying to make some sort of intelligent post with your comments that are above and beyond "playing games." All of us are. Most of us are just posting on forums instead of playing a game right now, including people like you. Why are you even on these forums? Why don't you just go play games and stop talking about sales and trends and console loyalty?

I've said it before, I hate hypocracy. You are no better than any of us, and your points have been drival. We aren't your typical gamers. We are industry enthusiasts. We care about the industry and our favorite companies and what decisions they make and how they fair (because we first loved games). Isn't that part of what VGChartz is all about? Well, thats where many of its users come from, so I hope you aren't dissing the people that come here to give the site hits as that would be quite silly on your part.

There's a difference between analyzing and comparing Nintendogs to Titanic.

That being said, I am above you. Because I said so.

lol. well good for you. Your posts clearly show that you are superior in every way. I apologize for questioning the validity of your intentions, and I'm certain that your assuredness will get you very far in life.

That being said, I think we should be allowed to get into whatever gaming discussion we want as long as there are people willing to discuss back. If we cannot have discussions on VGChartz, then I don't know where else is suitable. I, personally, am glad that this place isn't like Gamespot's systemwars or Gamefaqs. Most people here are older and more intelligent, which is a rarity amongst gaming forums, one that makes this forum mine of choice. Anyone who does not respect VGChartz for these qualities doesn't respect a large portion of why it's special to our community.

Argh, there seriously needs to be a joke tag!

I can't get any relief around here ha ha ha!

I love this site more than you know.

I apologize Montana, I didn't mean to step on your toes as severly as it seemed. I just haven't seen your posts that show much respect for others made by those who do not necessarily share your views. You seem to repeat your points regardless of the surrounding views and regardless of their validity, as if fighting some head strong crusade for your companies of choice. I must admit, that I am a fan of Nintendo for many thought out reasons, but I do concede to what Sony and Microsoft have brought to this industry and I do think that Sony has a chance to come back this generation. PS3 is on par with the PS2 still, but this holiday is going to be the next stage in telling that fate for them. Will they rise or fall during the rest of Nov and Dec? It will be interesting to watch. Would the industry have crashed again had the Wii not come? One can argue either side of this and have good points. Is the Wii a huge shift in the industry that will change gaming forever? Only time will tell. The fun shouldn't be in proving the other side wrong, but investigating all avenues to see possibilities.

There ya go again!

It's fine.

But I'm a God! So there.:)

Right now the PS3 and 360 are clawing up the cliff desperately trying to force themselves to be next gen, losing money and costing the consumer more as a result just to force the same graphics we'll have in the next generation (gen 8) regardless. The Wii was wise enough to see the tall cliff infront of it and decided to take the round-a-bout path defining itself this generation with innovation rather than forced graphics biding its time so that it's successor will have "true next gen" graphics when it is economic and realistic in Gen 8.

This thread has become quite heated. No-one can deny that Nintendo originally salvaged videogames, that much is fact. Regarding the "casual gamer issue", didnt we all start off as casual gamers? Nobody starts off as a hardcore gamer, introducing people to the market is the first step towards hardcore gamer and the majority of us on here have sat through nearly 15+ years of gaming if not more. I consider myself to be a hardcore gamer, i own a Wii and a 360. Basically, more casual gamers is not a bad thing, you think the majority of PS2 owners were hardcore gamers? God no, if that was the case, then why would crap movie tie-in licensed products top the charts yearly.
Last generation, my mother asked me when i would grow up and stop playing consoles, this generation she has one at home with her and my father. I dont have any further points about the thread only that i agree the industry was/is in decline. Gaming needs to become mainstream now to last. The poster who compared it to the music industry got it spot on when he talked about his "Britney Spears Theory". An increase in casual gamers doesnt mean the end of hardcore titles (despite what you think Legend) it means more flexiblity to make those. Rather than developing one game that can make or break the company, designers are allowed to be more original and expressive with their creations because they have other games out there that will generate a profit for certain.
