Forums - Sony - Sony opens new stylish concept shops in Japan

Up until the release of the phenomenon that is the Nintendo Wii, Sony dominated the gaming industry, particularly in its homeland of Japan. To help regain some of the lost recognition in the land of the rising sun, Sony has opened up 2 “Concept Shops” in 2 of Japan’s largest consumer electronics retail chains.

Each of the storefronts are the real world equivalent of a PlayStation gamer’s heaven. One location is in Yamada Denki’s flagship store in the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo, the other is located at the Joshin Denki retail store in Osaka, Japan.

Looks very nice... Its funny these days with Apple and Microsoft also opening up stores, its like its becoming a dealership for cars.

I doubt we'll see these in the US. Games are a pretty low margin market in North America (and presumably Europe), which is why all dedicated game stores inevitably deal with used goods.

I'm not sure how much better margins would be for Sony, since they're the guys making the goods, but I doubt such stores would make a decent return either way. Hence why the store in California was shut down last year.

I suppose they could be used as loss leaders, helping to grow brand awareness (which seems to be the case with the stores in Japan), but that's about it.
