You make a good point, but there's a big BUT: most of these games that lack innovation don't sell 10-20 million copies. Pokémon does, every generation, while the basic games don't change much, at all. That's why quite a few people feel the need to call the games out on it. And to be honest, I agree with them.

The fact that it sells 10 million is exactly why it SHOULDN'T be bashed for it's lack of innovation. Innovation is meant to keep things new and interesting. The fact that the series keeps selling means it doesn't need to innovate... because people clearly are happy with the product as it is. If a yearly car keeps getting amazing sales, they should change it up just because? That's exactly what the Pokemon sideproducts are for... so they can test changes and see how people adjust to them. Truth is the main product is still what people want. No reason to change it up in the main franchise till that's not the case. Change for changes sake is never good.

it's the same get medals, league, rocket team domination of the world deal.

while gameplay improved they are on the same settings, the anime it's same state.

around last year i started playing platinum, i got bored after that fighting pokemon gym leader and the steel city, i couldn't continue because i felt i was doing something i did before, and got bored.

though u know there are other games of excitement that climbing a building to fight a space like looking guy that uses some kind of cat as a cat pokemon.

games does need variety. or end being tedious. pokemon haven't change since the first one in that way, they just added more pokemons.

instead of snorlax blocking ur way to continue , now u have a  psyducks with headache.

Also there have been actually a LOT of changes between the games. They're just stuff you don't notice right away. The story hasn't changed... but the story is about as vital to a pokemon game as it is to a Mario game.
