Forums - Microsoft - Mass effect 2 is overrated and here's why.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I don't think we can put this article off as being an anti-360 article from an anti-360 website. For instance, look at what they said about GOW 3 versus Halo: Reach and how Sony's and Microsoft's lineups compare:

I’m not real big on comparing apples to oranges. Comparing God of War III to Halo Reach is exactly that, but as a multiplatform gamer I cannot help but be more excited for Reach after seeing it in action. Not only does the Reach video showcase graphics that are on par or greater than God Of War III in its final build, the game is still in development. It’s bound to look even better at launch. For anyone that is thinking that Kratos is going pull a fast one and snag GOTY in 2010 is fooling themselves. I think after God of War III drops and doesn’t push the systems that Sony predicts that it will, it’s time for Sony to revitalize the project. It just not as exciting as it once was. It just doesn’t spark the interest in anyone other than a hardcore God of War fan. It doesn’t have both the mass and hardcore appeals that Halo Reach has. After seeing both of Sony’s and Microsoft’s best of the best for 2010, I personally see the year being the nail in Sony’s coffin rather than the year they “catch up”

It’s not real hard to see what happened here, Mass Effect 2 was a major release, with a lot of money riding on it’s success for a very large publisher.  Reviewers took a look at the first play through of what is a pretty long campaign, and rated it without going the extra mile by looking at all of its difficulties and settings.  It’s understandable really, but it’s also like judging a book by it’s cover.  The full body of work for Mass Effect 2 is still a great overall package, but I think that it deserves a much closer look before we can go ahead and anoint it the G.O.T.Y. especially if you haven’t played it on the Insanity Skill Level.  So go ahead, I dare you to give it a try.  But only do so if you are willing risk your perception of the game and it’s so called greatness.

That can go for every game this generation. This entire generation has been about hype. I do believe that a lot of games that have garnered 10/10 and 9.5/10 haven't all deserved it. This all goes back to when GTA came out and the reviewers awarded 10's as if 10's where normal score to give games.

The worst part is this will continue. This generation will continue to be riddled with hype and most times all we'll get is a mediocre game.

I don't think it's hype so much as initial impression. Some games/movies leave such a strong initial impression that you end up thinking more higly of it than if you were to think more objectively. I don't think it's a bad thing though, it shows that gaming experiences are becoming more than just what's on the screen, for some people, it's starting to involve something emotional.

The first 10 minutes of Maass Effect 2, man. Simply amazing.

This is also part of my belief of why some people are going crazy over Avatar.

Just shows that the entertainment industry is more adept at immersing people, which I think is great.

What a tool!

16 hours? You missed like half the game.

I beat the game on Insanity and he does have some good points. The AI is RETARDED. Half the time they will not follow your orders. and their are only some glitches particularly on the Krogan Planet. For some reason that place is riddled with bugs.

I enjoyed Insanity though. I got to play for 45 hours. That is over 20 more than most people put into it. All the other modes looked like jokes from the video.

there are greater tragedies in life than not getting your 75G achievement. if you're gonna play a difficulty called Insanity, be ready for a fucked up hard time!

Yeah, if you even attempt at running out in the open you are screwed. Cover is your FRIEND.

hate or no hate.. the AI is shit poor.

I don't feel ME2 is overrated at all. In any game, you up the difficulty setting, and more is required. You play Halo on Easy, and you can pretty much just blitz everything, all game. You put it on Legendary, and if you run head-on into every situation, you're going to die. Similarly, I just finished ME2 on veteran, and I largely let my AI allies do their own thing, and utilizing their abilities vs the tougher enemies. Same thing I did on Veteran for ME1. But just like ME1, when I switch to a higher difficulty, I will be taking more care to doing their skills and setting their positions myself. They are AIs, but they're YOUR squad, and the player is supposed to make them reach their full potential. Heck, if the AIs were as smart as players without your input, they'd need Hardcore to be the baseline difficulty, because Archangel and Mordin could pretty much do it without you.
