Forums - Sales Discussion - Prediction: Capcom will announce a major Wii game in 2010

RE5 I guess.

A bad game bomb on the HD console, all the sudden third party are going to jump to the Wii?

69 million users isn't enough?

Let's not create a false dichotomy. Nobody said anything about abandoning the HD consoles.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

"It seems to me the big Japanese third parties were already thinking about leaning more towards Nintendo, but Dark Void will seal the deal."

your words, right?

"Leaning more towards Nintendo", does that mean "abandoning HD development" to you?

Leaning toward meaning announcing MH4 for PS3, then changing their minds and bring it to the Wii, Or making the next Dark Void Wii exclusive.

harvey birdman 2?

if so alright!

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

Apart from the arbitrary exclusion of Nintendo titles, the fact that there are in fact four third party titles that have sold 3mill+ (with more that are looking very likely to reach that) and the fact that 3 million could only be the standard of success on HD platforms due to high costs, by the same token routsounmanman, have there been any third party titles that should have sold 3-4 million but didn't?

I don't think any of the publishers are dumb enough to buy into that. Not EA, not any of the companies that are claiming third party games can't sell on Wii. Industry people who claim Madworld, The Conduit or even the Wii Call of Duty games *ought* to have been bigger aren't fooling themselves, they're lying to us. Say something enough, it becomes the accepted narrative.

The reason I think Capcom, Sega, and perhaps THQ are probably more likely to support the Wii, apart from their own failures on HD consoles, is because they're not the biggest publishers. The larger the publisher the greater interest they have in maintaining the status quo, as they are the ones most capable of sustaining a number of expensive blockbusters every year that soak up most of the revenue in the games industry. In addition to that, they are the ones that have been making the most steps and progress on Wii.

Please re-read the bolded, blue part of my post:

"I think the problem with the Wii and third parties is not about their games bombing, rather than there's no game that had a raging success to persuade them, to show them there's a core market there.

How many huge (many millions - 3/4 million maybe) 3rd party sellers has Wii had? Nearly none (M&S is seen as nearly first party by them)

HD systems on the other hand have had many, like RE5, SFIV, MGS4,etc. Of course they don't see the difference in content provided to the Wii and HD systems. Can you honestly compare DS:Exctraction and Madworld to RE5?!"

To add a little to this, Bionic Commando and Dark Void were not developed by Capcom.  Bionic Commando was developed by GRIN (now defunct, a crappy developer anyways), and Dark Void was done by Airtight Games.  If anything, it just means that Capcom is going to be more careful about what titles they farm out to other developers.

http://kotaku.com/5435922/capcom-still-burning-over-bionic-commando-failure

"Our experience with Bionic Commando has demonstrated the difficulty of outsourcing the development of new title to overseas companies", he said. "Nevertheless, we cannot develop a sufficient number of titles without using the resources of these companies. This is why we plan to continue using these alliances."

"We are considering ways to separate the roles of activities in Japan and overseas. We plan to develop new titles primarily in Japan. Overseas companies may be used mostly to develop titles for existing game series with well-established characters and universal themes. Overseas companies will also handle certain parts and/or lineups of such games."

Capcom's in-house developed games have sold very well on the PS3 and XBox360.

Dead Rising: 1.75 million (XBox360)
Resident Evil 5: 5 million (PS3+XBox360)
Street Fighter 4: 3 million (PS3+XBox360)
Lost Planet: 2.3 million (PS3+XBox360)
Devil May Cry 4: 2.5 million (PS3+XBox360)

I understand that, the blue is exactly what I was disagreeing with. I think they're quite well aware of the difference in content, hence they're not fooling themselves, they're lying to us.
