Forums - General Discussion - What does an american accent sound like to a foreigner?

I sound like a Canadian at times. So yeah...

Mid-Westerners know English better than Southerners.

Sorry, but the south sucks.

The strong Southern US accent sounds pretty bad (as in cowboy movies but not limited to those)... but it can be funny too. Other American accents sound much better, and are the easiest form of English to understand IMO.

The standard British accent sounds pretentious and it's not as easy to understand as most American accents. Some other British accents are almost impenetrable, such as the Sccotish accent.

*shakes fist*

You crazy furriners, always confusing Georgian accents as standin' fer URRYBODY

Or Texan I guess

By the way, this might be a good website to use in this discussion:

I don't quite diversify between American accents. I can understand that there are different US regions each with their own accent but to me, most of the US accent sounds like English being gnawed off. I can't explain it differently. It isn't as bad as it sounds but it isn't sexy either.

New York is different though. New Yorkers gnaw as well, but far more nasal.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

Sounds American. Beyond some really obscure british accents I can pretty much understand all English accents.
