Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy XIII holds 10 hours of cutscenes

I find it interesting that FF games that story matters not game play. Final Fantasy is jut a name each story is different. So people who want final fantasy would just be happy with just FF movies and just forget actual games. Not arguing just trying to understand

@ Wagram

Oh no you didn't. Xenogears's storyline >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Every other FF storyline BY FAR. No Final Fantasy story has been as deep, in depth, mature, complex and engorssing as Xenogears' story. Are you sure you were playing the right game?

More story and less gameplay is what I like most.

Really? well I want more gameplay then cutscenes.

To be honest, I never played a Final Fantasy game for gameplay, thats the least of my worries. Good story/scenery and music is all that matters to me. But to each their own, right? :P

I'm actually playing FFVII for the first time, and although the actual gameplay is fun, the story is just way too long and slows down the game. I feel like I'm reading a book at times. Just not my thing.. If FFXIII is going to be like that, I might have to pass it up. I just don't find it very fun to sit there for 10 minutes pressing one button through the dialoge.

It's werid because I actually like many RPGs, but paradoxically hate games with long drawn out stories and cutscenes. I guess I just mainly like the RPGs where the story and cutscenes are not forced upon you, and there is more emphasis on action and exploration. Games like Oblivion where you can read the material whenever you want at your own pace, or chose to bypass it completely. And games like Secret of Mana, with very short cutscenes and little dialoge throughout the game. I think the player should always dictate the flow of the game, not the game itself.

The pace of Final Fantasy XIII is just fine, I don't think the cutscenes will annoy you that much, especialy since it has an engrossing story. If the story is REALLY good, does it still bother you?

Well after playing through FFVII, a game that's supposed to have one of the best game stories of all time, and still being bored, I guess I realized that yes, too much story being pushed upon me DOES bother me, regardless of how good it is. I find that I either like to completely relax and watch a movie or TV show and be enriched in the story, OR I like to be fully engaged in a game where I do everything myself. I generally don't like an infusion of the two.

That's not to say I don't like to have some kind of story or background in my games. I just like to be able to explore the story at my own pace and through my own experiences, not have the game dicate the flow and bombard me with enless dialouge and cutscenes. Like g-value said, WRPGs seem to be better in this respect than JRPGs. I do like some JRPGs though, just the more action based ones like Tales and Dragon Quest.

Ew, gross. I wouldn't want to watch a 10 hour movie, even if it let me play a really good game in the middle of it. I just don't have that kind of time anymore. I want more games as short as Portal, but still as epic as Portal.

The scary part is... my frist reaction was "That's all, eh?"

I was expecting more.

Lots of story =/= Good story.

Lots of times in movies stories get bad reviews for not being edited enough.

Amount of cutscenes is going to have no actual correlation with if the story is good.

I've been getting quoted a lot in this thread...

I really don't remember Xenogears story that well. I will have to replay that game soon, it was the reason I got Xenosaga after all...

This. The gameplay in Final Fantasy games were nerver the big attraction to the series, so to think they shpould change now is a little unrealistic. Besides, almost the whole second disc of Xenogears was a big cutscene with boss battles thrown in and it is the greatest RPG ever created to me.

I'm guessing you guys who are saying this have never played Final Fantasy 1.

I can understand how you can like the Tales games for it's battle system, but Dragon Quest? It doesn't really have the best gameplay you would find in a jrpg (it actually gets pretty boring at times). Have you ever play games like the Dark Cloud series or Rouge Galaxy? They have a major focus on gameplay with the gameplay actually being pretty damn awesome (too bad about their storylines).

If you've played the game, and the story was good... how is the length of the cutscenes news to you?
