I'm not sure that my laptop can handle Empire Total War, but it can handle the rest fine. I'm thinking about getting a new laptop (or a desktop) this summer, so I have a question about Steam. Can I redownload the games in 6 months time if I buy them now. I definitely want Rome Total War (can't find my retail copy) now, but can I redownload everything on the new system later?

Yes, you can download a game any number of times. The exception being games that have a limited number of activations, Empire: Total War isn't one of them.

I'm going to play an hour or so of Empire: Total War now :)
Just had the time to try it yesterday. I think I might have a widescreen problem though. My monitor sucks, and it isn't recognized for what it is in Windows. So very few games realize I have a widescreen monitor. It's sad :(

If you have correct resolution set in Windows then you should be able to change settings properly in every game.

isn't there an install CD with your monitor? try the manufacturer's webpage.

No, there wasn't an install CD with the monitor, and the drivers on the webpage aren't working. Right now I am forcing the resolution through Catalyst (ATI's videocard driver thingy). I can get the right resolution and refresh rate that way, but it's more difficult getting the right aspect ratio. I usually manage to get it working properly after a couple of hours, but it's never easy.

By "activation" I mean when it is installed on a PC.

Games that have limited activations on Steam include: Batman: Arkham Asylum - 4 per month machine activation limit; Crysis - 5 machine activation limit. All the games, or almost all the games, with limited activations are listed here.

Unless it's a game where it's DRM has activation limits (ex- Bioshock 2), then you can redownload it as many times as you like. If Empire: Total War isn't one that has stupid DRM like that then the only thing you'd have to worry about is a huge download whenever you want to reinstall it. In which case, you can try the backup utility after you download it for the first time to back the files up to a few DVD's.

@Rhonin The Wizard:

Nice, didn't know there was a list for DRM'd Steam games.

I heard Empire total war has lots of bugs,can any one deny/confirm this?

"They will know heghan belongs to the helghast"

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Thanks for the help. I also noticed your link a few posts further down from this one, with the list of games with activation limits. Cheers!
