When you buy a ps3 it comes with those yellow,white,red cables theyre called component cables right?..if thats what theyre called then whats the poin of getting Av component cables?

The ones that come with the system (yellow, red and white) are called composite cables. They are capable of only transmitting a resolution of 480i (I believe); referred to as standard definition or SD. Component cables (red, green, blue + audio) as well as HDMI are capable of HD resoultions.

No. There's no need to use both component and HDMI. The PS3 will only output through one of those sources. If your TV has both, it's cheaper and better to go with HDMI.

oh then thats a relief but something else I've been thinking about is will the ps3 work with just the HDmi and none of the composite/component cables connected?

The difference between 3 cable and 5 is this:

Composite (AV) Yellow = video. Red and white are L + R audio

Component (5 wire) are 3 (Yellow/Blue/Red) video + Red and White for L + R audio

Y carries luma (brightness) and sync information.
PB carries the difference between blue and luma (B − Y).
PR carries the difference between red and luma (R − Y).

In the PS3's video settings you can set how (HDMI, composite or component) and what resolution the PS3 will output. If your TV supports HDMI you'll only need to have an HDMI cable plugged in because HDMI outputs both video and audio on the one cable.

HDMI cables are nice and cheap if you buy them online at a place like Newegg or Monoprice. If you go to a place like Best Buy you'll be ripped off with their Monster brand cables that cost like $50 for three feet.
