Yeah, FF is a linear RPG Series in general.

I doubt FFXIII is any different from other games in the series lol. People like myself just like to diss FF out of jealousy.

that's the thing.

uncharted 2 was linear, no sidequest, divided in chapters that u could repeat if you want, same for all FPS, TPS, Story part of figther

are linear.

but some people want it to be like WRPG, but then WRPG fail at story telling, the progression can be messed up, characters interactions are random, and simply there is not really a focus on them either.

WRPG do what rpg's set out to do.....at least they arent action/adventure games with a leveling system like JRPGs.

Words of a fool :P

JRPG's are action/adventure games there is absolutely no "role-playing" in them.....while all wrpg's are about is "role-playing".

JRPG's are only RPGs in name , nothing more.

It is true, but those that make Heavy Rain a WRPG? If we are going by name here, a lot of games that have no-level up systems would fall into the WRPG category. I know I prefer action/adventure games with a leveling system than shooting games, I mean WRPG games.

HR is as true of an rpg as you can get........its a choose your path adventure, you play a characters role and you somewhat choose how that character will progress in the story.

Not all wrpg use shooting as a means of fighting but even if they do at least you can replay the game differently and get a different experience.....unlike JRPG's where linearity is bliss.

I prefer JRPGs/"action/adventure with a leveling system" because I don't have to decide what to say every conversation, worry about my actions in the story, which is exactly as you say role-playing game. But what you miss to comprehend is that role-playing also means to play the act of a character. For example, role-playing as king author would always be the same, you can't decide to play a bad king author that eats people because that is not who he was. If you do, you are no longer king author but something else. In JRPGs we take on the roles of these created character and play as them.

Newsflash!

Every game is linear. Like, EVERY game. What I mean, a game that can be beaten is linear.

The dumbest statement I have read in years.

FF 7,8,9, and 10 were all linear, ALL.

In FF8, the whole first disc you were in a tiny island and the galbadian continent with access to only 3 towns (2 mandatory, 1 optional). You didn't even have full access to the continent since moutains cut of the other parts. In Disc 2 you finally get to move around the ocean but mountains again prevent you from going to more rewarding quest areas. Finally in disc 3 is when you get full access, but you all know thats really the end of the game because in disc 4 everything gets blocked off.

FF9 was even more linear everything was 1 way for the first 2 disc. Disc 1, small slices of the mist continent as the story progressed. Disc 2, the outer continent, smaller than the mist continent. Disc 3 access to everywhere you have been before, near end of disc 3 you finally get full access to the whole game with airship.

FF10, the true king of linearity, this game is more linear than FFXIII. I imported the game.

FF12 is the only open world FF that was not linear at all, you could go almost everywhere before the half point of the story.

It's so ridiculous that everyone and their mother has jumped on the linear bandwagon, FF fans need to clarify this to those who keep say it like it's something new.

lame thread.

How was 7,8,9,10 linear?  Your explanation just shows how ignorant you are.  Second, don't mention people's mothers in the conversion since it has nothing to do with it, ever.  FF12 wasn't linear?  Are you kidding me?

Pretty ridiculous thread.  Are you desperate for vgchartz monies?

So, you are saying 7,8,8, and 10 were not linear but 12 was? You obviously never played them. Mothers, a figure of speech you failed to comprehend. I'm desperate for your mother.

Its Just Another Way for a Few of the Hardcore FF Fans To HATE and turn people on every Final Fantasy that was not a Copy and Paste OF Their Favorite , and FF7 Seems To Be The Game They Want A copy and paste of MOST often.
It just does not matter what Square has Done , No FF Can Live up to their Favorite EVER again.

Atto Suggests...:

Book - Malazan Book of the Fallen series

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

Games are all linear to an extent. But it's getting harder to deal with the real traditional JRPG's for me. I just tried to follow up Mass Effect 2 with Tales of Vesperia and I didn't last an hour. And I like JRPGs. But it's so simple and straightforward, I just can't do it yet.

FF XIII will have more eye candy and a little more pizazz than a Tales game, granted, but I fear that my ability to just get lead through might irk me a bit. Gonna play it, of course, but I'm glad I'll have some space away from a great WRPG first.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

FF X is linear and is a kickass game.

Nevermind, i'm not going into this.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

does anyone know how long is ff XIII
