BengaBenga .. if it's a daily 40k then it's more than enough :P - yea I know that first day will have the biggest spike ,but you made it sound like it was available for the whole week ,but actually it only was one day!

Thats good, Just Ben why all the PS3 threads?
I'm betting at the moment on a rise of the PS3 on SE, so thats why I am naturally interested. But also because it makes a lot of news at the moments. So does the Wii, but hell I get beaten to post those news by others :o)

I significant price cut will always increase sales.  If you look at the sales in Japan, they're likely about 3x normal, which is good for a price drop.  But the PS3 is a special case where most Japanese originally said it was too expensive, and the feeling has been changing to say they don't want it as badly.  50,000 initial sales right off of a price drop isn't exactly awesome, even if that's very good for the PS3.

Let the price drop settle.  That way we'll see if it looks like it may be ineffective in the long term like the European price drop looks, or whether it will permanently increase overall sales.  I'd be surprised to see the PS3 settle much about 20k/week after the holiday season.

I think it's a little to early to tell just yet how the price drop will help Sony, in the long term at least.

Going to be interesting to see when Nintendo drop the price of the Wii in Japan. That should make things interesting.

Well the sales have multiplies in the three markets ,the machine is getting a lot of good games (Uncharted ,Assasins Creed ,Guitar Hero III ,Haze ,Rock Band ,Unreal III ,Ratchet and Clank Future ,Singstar ,PES 2008 ,Gran Turismo 5 Prologue ) and everything is looking positive .

I think 8 million for years end is very feasible ,9 million or better 10 million would be great but doubt it will manage those numbers .

Just to put things into perspective ,PS3 has sold after the last sources 75K and 100K in North America the two last weeks ,it has sold this week 60K in Japan the first day of price cut ,the european sales have multiplied by 3 in a permanent way ....the console is probably about 6 million now and will do a very good first year considering all the problems it have had ...and the software lineup for a first year is truly the best one I remember .

Next year it will have Devil May Cry 4 ,Metal Gear 4 ,Resident Evil 5 ,Final Fantasy XIII ,Killzone 2 ,Gran Turismo 5 ,Disgaea 3 ,White Knight Story ,GTAIV and many other games that will push its sales in a great way .The PS3 wont be ,as hard as some wish it to happen ,a failure ...even if it dont manage the PS2 numbers .

@ W29

Did you trade in your PS3 for a 360? Where is your PSNtag at in your sig.

Still no info on how many of those 60,000 units are 40GB models. I'm really wondering whether or not this gambit is actually paying off for Sony or if price cuts and game releases are what is really selling units.

Right... Just remember how much Sony had to do to come "back from the brink." Price cuts, new SKUs, and big-name releases, and the PS3 is still trailing the Wii, which has been sitting pretty at the top with a fully-loaded gun, in weekly worldwide sales.

Doing all that and still not coming out on top isn't exactly something to celebrate.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."
