Little bump from ME2.

PS3 stabilising at 90k? That's crazy, considering what it's been like in previous February weeks...

Good start for MAG as a new IP (I assume that those who say that don't understand what happened with preorders are joking, right ? - Don't be surprised when BF:BC2 on PS3 dosen't meet the preorder numbers for the same reasons as MAG).

Mass Effect 2 - As expected / In "others" will sell 330k at most.

Americas Preorders Chart, 23rd Jan 2010:

Mass Effect 2 - 475,782
MAG: Massive Action Game - 245,491

I knew the preorder charts were too high for MAG
Still a good start.

I suspect the Beta gathered MAG most of its buyers, while some who placed pre-orders didn't like the Beta and cancelled.  I'm not sure the pre-order totals get decremented as well as incremented.

Either that or the number was way high, but it's actually closer to final sales than ME2 pre-orders, so I think it's more likely at a point it looked like MAG had accumulated 250 K pre-orders but no-one was decrementing the 50K who changed their mind and cancelled.

Well of course, but it would have been a lot more than 50k that cancelled their pre-orders, unless we think that every one sold was pre-ordered..... which I suppose is possible.

It's more of a hunch to be honest.  I look at an FPS in US with current PS3/360 install and the fact it's clear a lot of the core FPS players are on 360, and I figure sales will be low, particularly for something like MAG that is in many ways a niche online FPS.  I therefore figure that a large percentage (not all of course) of buyers would have been on the Beta and liked it, formed clans, etc. or passed on word of mouth to some friends (driving the percentage of non Beta purchases is my guess).

I'm assuming that in US you can switch a pre-order if you do it early enough - i.e. I've decided I don't want MAG after all I'll have a bit of Mass Effect 2 instead

The number could just have been too high, but that implies all the pre-order numbers are pretty unreliable.  I'm therefore considering what might have caused the impression of higher pre-orders than the final position - for example people cancelling pre-orders and switching them because they didn't like the Beta or word of mouth about it.

I'm actually surprised MAG got around 200K allowing for percentage error.  I thought it would be less initially with the game having legs if it got a strong, deveoted following.

Interesting, I think the opposite.... very front loaded, which if I am right after these figures will be bad news.

Well, as I said I thought it might open low and be a grower.  Now I'm not so sure.  I think the scores plus learning curve may seriously impact its legs.

The game's not for me, but I'd like it to succeed if it can find it's audience as I do think the basic concept is interesting and it would be a shame for it to die.  Still, that's market dynamics for you.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I don't get why MAG would be seen as something that would bump sales of the PS3 much. It is a new franchise, and multiplayer focused. A game that is multiplayer focus gets sales when people's friends are playing it and they want to play with their friend. If you throw in top-flight single player, marketed it right, and have the right buzz, you do have a chance to get a sales boost.

I would also want to see how the 360 does longer term here, before I can say that even Mass Effect 2 is a system seller.

Great opening for Mass Effect 2!
Very good for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom , and solid for No More Heroes 2. It will be interesting how this games sell in the long term.

Good HW sales all around as well.

I can't stand for Just Dance sales.

No, just no.

It´s an awesome game and deserves every sale it gets, it may not be a game that suits you but that doesnt make it a bad game.

It´s a very good game at what its supposed to do better then most other games if you look at what thay are supposed to achieve.

Most people I know here in Others prefer the superior platform for Mass Effect 2, so we're playing it, just not on a 360...

J'King on the superior, but in Others most people I know still prefer PC for this type of game vs console and I'm pretty sure if you added 360/PC together you'd see a decent total for Others.

No one sensible (like me for example) expected to see any noticable jump in PS3 sales for MAG.  It's a very niche online FPS.  I think it's very good at what it does, better than most of the average reviews, but it's just not going to appeal wildely.  Even my appreciation is only fair critisicm, I'm not that interested myself!

ME2 will not be a sustained system seller for 360 IMO.  This week shows a modest bump, which is the best I would have expected for ME2.  The bulk of the sales were also US as in Others it seems to sell more evenly between 360 and PC vs being 360 centric.  Soon enough, probably even next week, the bump will go leaving 360 without any noticable sustained lift.  Probably.

At this stage, unless someone produces a hell of an amazing new IP for either the PS3 or 360 only the first major launches of big franchises will see the kind of spikes, for example, PS3 saw in Japan with FFXIII.  GT5 should deliver a big bump, GoW3 will deliver at least a modest one and might deliver a big one.  Reach will probably deliver a modest one (too many Halo titles on 360 already I believe for Reach to deliver a big bump, but you never know).  Beyond that I'm scratching my head for other examples - maybe someone will help?
