Forums - Sony - Sony Announces Q3 Results (PS3 is at 33.5 million) - Net income is $861 mln

Folks, note that it says 33.5 until January 1st. Which means based on VGCHARTZ numbers at that point, we have about 30.8 Million on January 1st (31.5- 700,000K January sales up to Jan 23rd).

So vgchartz based on shipped vs actual sold is assuming that we have 2.8 million PS3 setting on shelves, which in my openion is hard to believe with the shortages we had with the 120 GB SKU.

What do you guys think?

I agree 2.8 million looks a bit high... but I don't know if they count units as shipped as soon as they leave Sony, it could be that units in transit are counted in which case it wouldn't be so weird.

In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if there were was some adjustment.

Good result for the company, all the cost cutting (layoffs etc) paid off.

As for the Gaming/VAIO/Walkman division, not so great. They barely made a profit, in the holiday quarter that's not a great result:

It also says the profit was mostly due to VAIO, and gaming profitability unchanged (which basically means they broke even, as that was the result last year).

Summing up - good for Sony, not so good for the gaming division.

Gaming division has been pretty much dead weight all the time. Hopefully Sony will make it profitable in the end and recover some losses. Otherwise it has been dragging around that dead carcass for too long for nothing and might affect quite heavily for Sonys gaming division future.

Its good that Sony sees profit as a whole however.

I think the PS3 just went from 6 to midnight.

Geez, the PSP = epic fail (only noticed the 15m->10m decrease now). Good on the PS3 for maintaining its target.

From gaf:

the method of reporting hardware and software unit sales has been changed from production shipments (b) to recorded sales (a)

LTD Sales (a) / Cumulative Production Shipments (b)

                           (a+b) (b)     (a+b)   (a)
Dec 31,2009       PSP    PS1    PS2      PS3

Hardware           63.0   102.5 145.7   33.5

Software            244.0 962.0 1508.8 261.2

note the a, b and a+b at the top of the categories.

ps3 is sales, psp is both, ps1 is shipments.

@makingmusic476: WTF, I thought they ended this shipped/produced confusion a while ago?

3 million on the shelves seems to be high specially with the shortages of 120 GB.

think sold in this consideration is sold to retailers and not sold to endusers. but this would mean that the gap of over 2.5 million would have been all sitting on teh shelves of retailers for which it should be too big.
