No adjustments guys, our sell-through figures are fine. I also find it hard to understand how there are 7-8m discrepancies between our PS2/PSP figures and Sony's figures but at the end of the day, our data lines up with all major tracking firms in most major regions - Japan, USA, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe - our data across all consoles lines up closely with the same data from the various tracking firms and research reports. The only region where we may be out slightly is "other others" - Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, China, South Africa, Middle East etc - although that won't be accounting for 7-8 million differences.

I think the issue must still be in how exactly they define "sell-in", because for whatever reason a certain percentage of the units they are selling-in don't seem to sell-through.

AFAIK it's because they used to count produced as shipped... and when they changed, they didn't update the past data, so there are still a lot of produced but not shipped units counting towards the total.

Haven't we been over this several times?

PS: Produced but not shipped units would be things like replacement consoles under warranty and things like that, I suppose.

Wouldn't the problem be even worse then that?

Because EVERYTHING that was produced before the reporting method but not shipped to a store would be double counted?

It'd be a problem for PS3's to a lesser extent too.

That's why it's kinda unbeliveable that they wouldn't update the figures.

True, there could also be some double-counting if they didn't adjust for that. It may not affect Sony's figures if they accounted for it (since they don't publish lifetime totals I think), but it would still affect anyone who sums up all of Sony's numbers.

2.5 million PS3's isn't THAT hard to believe out there.

With lack of the 120GB model in the US??? I don't thing so.

Sure it is... A sony executive just said yesterday that they sold 31 million consoles.

Then how about this? Sir Howard Stringer said they've sold 33m of PS3 when he paid visit to mainland China last December?

That executive you mentioned is in charge of PS Network...I don't think he can get batter number than Howard Stringer....

Stringer was no doubt talking about shipped. As Sony does 9 times out of 10.

Good result for Sony overall but mixed news for the gaming division.

As for the discussion with regards to over/under tracked I think it is entirely likely that due to the holiday season replenishment would of been much higher so the channel would potentially have a lot more units in it. Some items will of been air freighted whilst the majority will probably be on boats.

The number does seem high though even taking this into account. Unless anything comes forward between now and Q4 results we may just have to continue speculating.

That's not vary big problem since they always adjust the numbers...check the reports of different quarters or years, you'll find that.

ps. Does anyone really read Sony's Japanese quarter reports before questioning the numbers?

this post makes a lot of vg folks very happy :) it feels like Friday here already!

It looks like the profit came from the computers, not the gaming division. The game division was relatively unchanged.

Sales actually fell for the game unit.

http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/09q3_sony.pdf

Sales: Increased by 1.9%

  • Mainly due to higher sales of VAIOTM PCs, which experienced increased unit sales in all regions
  • Game: Decrease primarily as a result of a decrease in unit sales of PS2 hardware and software, and PSP hardware

Operating income: 19.4 bln yen

  • Primarily due to an improvement in the profitability of VAIO PCs, due to higher unit sales
  • Game: Despite a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, as well as PSP hardware unit sales, profitability was relatively unchanged mainly due to an improvement in the cost of PS3 hardware

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Yeah, and this post makes many Sony haters feel anxious...
