Forums - Sony Discussion - The Reality behind a PS3 Slim

I find it funny that most Sony fanboys here claim that the moment PS3 releases a slim version this will equal to total sales going off the roof! There's a fact t hat PS3 fanboys are forgetting: The reason why PSOne and PS2 Slim did so great was because the Playstation brand had already reach mass market success, had a great price and were the consoles with the most amount of AAA games.

Guess what? This is not the case this generation. Sure, if the PS3 Slim comes out and there's a price cut it will increase sales of the console. However the same will happen with a potential price cut for the  Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. They don't need to change the shape of the console to win, after all Nintendo has never changed the shape of their consoles and yet they had 2 winning generations.

Get with the program, PS3 will not be successful because of PS3 Slim, it will only be if somehow Sony manages to get developers to stop making games for the 360. Till that happens there's no way the 360 will just suddenly stop selling.

What does a PS2 or PS3 slim have to do with a x360?
The mind boggles.

I guess I shouldn't have fallen into the trap of entering a flamebait thread, but whatever.

They need to get developers to stop making games for the 360? That's possibly to worst thing I've ever heard. What about just making sure good games are made for their own console?

I edited my post cuz I wasn't making much sense (hangover from last night haha). But I think my point is clearer now!

I agree 100%, the PS3 slim will boost sales of the PS3 but unless the 360 stops getting games and exclusives I might add its not just going to stop selling. Sony can't win by just breaking even with Microsoft they have to begin outselling the 360 by a decent amount.

Look at the N64 and Gamecube, heck, even the Dreamcast! They all had fantastic games yet they didn't manage to compete with Playstation 1 and 2. Truly was developers support that generated sales for Sony. Back then very few 3rd parties developed for those systems which created a lack of diversity for each respective console.

@Stan
lol I hate hangovers.

But the PS3 will do gangbusters imo - provided it's cheaper than the current PS3 model and just as (or more)reliable as the current one.

The games are fine, I think.
Will it ever catch or beat the 360? Patcher thinks so, but he's been wrong before.
Only time will tell.

Just out of curiosity, can you or anybody find the total PS1 & PS2 sales before the release of the slim models? and then the current or most recent total sales of PS1 & PS2 til now?  I just want to see how much sales increased after the slim's release. Thanx

But maybe the other main focus with slim is reducing production costs so they can drop the price? And PlayStation has still a lot of brand power at least in EU where PS3 is not too much behind of X360 with double price point. Slim and 100€ cut to the price and I don't think MS can answer that even with price drop because X360 is so dirty cheap even now. Also Japan loves always smaller things.(PSP sales rose tremendously with slim). I admit that America is lost case for Sony.

What killed the Dreamcast was pirating. In the case of N64 it was Nintendo's fault. Sony approached Nintendo to make a CD based console. Nintendo, knowing the potential of pirating CDs said no and continued with the cartridges, hence the N64.

With the potential release of a ps3 slim there is a chance that backwards compatibility for ps2 will also be released (i.e. the current rumors suggesting a software emulator for the EE on the Cell). Imagine, even if they left the ps3 slim at $399, it would be in essence a $100 dollar reduction. With a ps3 now costing $399 and a ps2 $99 the two together would cost ~$500, but now you can get them both for $399. Also if they do allow the possible backwards compatibility for current ps3's then all would be happy.
