Forums - Gaming Discussion - Tethered PSVR RTS works!

I tried out Tethered tonight and I'm hooked.

It's a real time strategy game with the game world laid out below and all around you. You hatch little peeps that do your bidding with the ultimate goal to gather enough spirit energy to advance to the next island.

Controls are very simple. Each island has a fixed number of viewpoints represented as little clouds hanging in the sky. Simply look at one and press x to warp there. You control peeps by looking at them, hold x, look at what they need to do and release x. You start out by gathering food then wood, stone and metal as well. You unlock upgrades by studying books which allows you to build a number of buildings.

Weather clouds occasionally spawn which help replenish resources or you can combine them to create either a rainbow for a bonus or a thunderstorm to strike down enemies. There is a day/night cycle and every night you'll be under attack which can lead to some frantic looking back and forth to get everyone mobilized. Then next day don't forget anyone, as they'll off themselves from boredom (jump off a cliff) if you leave anyone idle too long.

Being completely immersed in the world feels great. It looks great in the headset, watching the waterfall spill from the miniature set in the tutorial level is amazing. The controls work like a charm, the text is clear and easily readable, it all feels very polished. I tried RTS with the move before on ps3, didn't work out for me, this however simply works. Look, click, Look, release, simple.

There are 13 islands in total, took me 35 minutes for the tutorial and again 35 minutes for the first island. Then you can improve your ratings as I got stamped with uncaring for the first island. Each island has a leaderboard if you feel competitive. I mainly find it very relaxing to play, first god game and it's hitting all the right notes without adding too much complexity.

I also tried out World war toons free beta. Looks good too on psvr but I'm done with the turning handholding. Just let me rotate normally with the right stick instead of discreet steps. I don't have any problems with motion sickness in Rigs or DC so why lock me into using R1/L1 to rotate in fixed steps. That feels very unnatural while playing a fps. Otherwise it's a decent multiplayer shooter (works without psvr too)

The brookhaven experiment is out. Ported over from HTC Vive. Looked interesting at first until I found out you can't move at all! You simply stand in one spot and shoot down waves of zombies coming at you. Really, I'm OK, I can walk in VR without puking!

Windlands might be more for me. Grapple hook travel between floating islands. There doesn't seem to be much more to it so I'm waiting for reviews. So far the only review mentions getting very sick from the game lol. Plus at almost the same price as Tethered, that is a much better choice imo.

One more new game out, Weeping doll. An exploration game. Investigate everything inside a house to find out the secret the house is holding. Again no free walking, warping instead, bleh. Give me the choice, stop the handholding. It seems most developers are so afraid to get the motion sickness stamp on their game that they won't even give you the option to walk. Hopefully that changes soon, because for now 3rd person games have the edge over first person experiences.

Ack, past 3am again already. PSVR is so good :)

Still only 2 reviews out for Tethered.

The lack of reviews for VR games isn't helping. Windlands 1 review for the PC version, no reviews for Brookhaven experiment although it's been out for Vive for a while, no reviews for Weeping doll. Sadly it seems that review sites have already lost their interest in VR.

That's where demos and reading other people's impressions will have to come into play. There just isn't enough people providing content. Maybe there should be a site that specializes in VR reviews? And maybe you should make it.

Good idea, if I had the time, the money and the will :)

Demos would be a good idea for all VR games. After using it for a while I'm getting a better idea what to expect from screenshots, yet the difference is so big any conventional media just doesn't give a good idea of what the games are like. And while I have no trouble with motion sickness whatsoever, it would suck to pay $60 for a game that makes you sick for hours.
