But we don't know anything about the VGC economy

Seriously though, can't really make up an opinion on such a matter without knowing anything about the internal affairs of said hypothetical country.

Really hard to say without knowing much about our island nation.

What is VGC's economy based on? Energy? Agriculture? Industry? Commercial? Tourism? Banking?

What is the scale of our economy? Are we a major power like the United Kingdom or a tiny nation like, um, the Faroe Islands or something?

May seem pedantic, but my guess how most European countries think about it.

I could say we are the size of the island of Ireland... maybe we are rich in rare materials valuable for the production of advanced tech (such as phones, vidya and such) We could be focused on Services. We lack agriculture though.

Hopefully that's a good enough answer for you  for now. I'll think it about it more.

VGC is now an island off the coast of Europe. The EU, ever hungry for more members, insists we get annexed join. A referrendum for membership is now taking place. Will you vote NO! or YES! ?

In other words, i'd like to know your thoughts on the EU and if you'd give up your independece like your country to join/stay. I encourage serious discussion and stating of opinions. No fighting.

Wikipedia says:

The European Union (EU) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in EuropeThe EU has developed a single market through a standardised system of laws that apply in all member states. Within the Schengen Area, passport controls have been abolished. EU policies aim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enact legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintain common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries, and regional development.

Personally, i'd vote NO!

Unless you actually meet certain socio-economic conditions the EU won't ask you to join, and even if you want to join they will tell you to bugger off until you have sorted some things out. So your entire premise is false. The EU never compelled any country to join, every country that's joined has done so because they have all percieved a much greater upside to being in the club than the downsides. And the countries that haven't joined are either unwanted by the EU because they don't pass muster, or they have not liked the downsides so have remained independant (Norway, Switzerland etc), and the EU hasn't done anything to force them into the union. And even with those countries they've had to sign treaties to agree to implement all EU regulations for any goods and services that will be exported to EU members and all interactions with EU members that are subject to any Eu regulations. So in effect their relationship to all other EU countries is no different to if they were full EU members anyway.

As it stands now though, it's hard to argue the case that it would be particularly beneficial to join the EU formally rather than have a treaty / agreement situation a la Norway and Switzerland.

I would vote no. Because it horrible failure in immigration politics. and other things. SOme things are good with the EU. but tbh Sweden would be better off without the EU

EU made the mistake of lowering the criteria for the east European countries formerly under the Soviet yoke. The idea being that it's better to have them in the EU and under western influence than potentialy returning to a pseudo client state status of a de-communised Russia.

No problem with doing this hypothetical excercise, but you have to make the premise as realistic as possible and hence you can't start out by saying the EU is trying to force VGC to join.

@97alexk doesn't Sweden have a highly liberal immigration policy all of its own accord? I don't think Swedes can blame the EU for any problems it's experiencing with immigration, especially not any refugeee issues. That's mostly self inflicted AFAIK.

Hmm, I've yet to go to Europe or to have any experience with the EU, but it's probably worth it to stay :p

So many good ideas ruined by a bunch of demented bureausaurs and politicians. We should kill them all and make EU again from scratch.
