To be fair the analysis needs more work.

For example. what was number of handhelds sold at the time of launch, and total Nintendo handhelds sold at launch.

What? You confuse me here

He probably means that while 3DS is not having overwelming numbers, it has a bigger predecessor, while GBA decreased a lot with the launch of DS (even when it was not selling that well). He's righe about the statement, but this is a positive thing for Nintendo as a whole, not for 3DS, since we're speaking of a comparison between the two handhelds.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Christmas christmas christmas. 3DS will likely lose in launch-alignments until we have a first-holiday-season in there

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nintendo expected more then wht they got from 3DS which means they expected to much.

the sales look fine when you line them up, and this holiday season will tell the tell.

depends on couple of factors

1)was against psp so sold low, here 3ds doing bad

2)bad time of the year, here 3ds is doing good

3)ds went against the bigger brand name aka psp at that time and didn't have the buzz 3ds,here 3ds is bad

I like this picture!

DS on its 25th week 3DS on its 25th week
81,585 314,309

3DS beats DS by +232,724

*DS is at the Week Ending of May 14th 2005

DS by its 25th week 3DS by its 25th week
5,132,523 3,797,585

DS is beating 3DS by -1,334,938

If 3DS keeps its legs it could outsell the DS by alot on the holiday season

I think the 3DS will pick up in sales during the holiday, but I'll be surprised if is sells as many units as the DS did.

I am not understanding the second part of your graph?

What's not to understand? He switched DS and 3DS positions but the numbers are correct.

A) they are japanese and accept punishment for failure, rather, they punish themselves for failure.

B) their failure is on revenues over the past 18 months... they have not managed to lift the curve and it becomes apparent that the curve will stay low untill next christmass -> big failure for a money printing house.

You have to realize that directors and high executives answer to the board and the board is elected by shareholders. Low revenues and dipping shares makes the shareholders and therefore the board (as they look bad) unhappy. The salary slash is a way for the executive to avoid having to resign under shareholder presure... and salaries at that level is a bit irrelelvent, your money is made on bonnuses and they made a ton in the past few years.... hopefully they'll make a ton in 12month's time too. (I may  be off on the workings of nintendo, i'm speaking more in general terms here).

In a world of Golden Parachutes, and greedy Western executives, it would be nice just once to see a Goldman Sachs exec. take a paycut for their shitty performance.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.
