Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft looking into a new format for next generation xbox?

With rumours of all next gen consoles already being underway it makes me wonder what format The next Xbox will use? It has already shown, not problems but dissadvantages to Blu ray coming towards then end of this generation with Games coming out on multiple discs which is ok for now but what how will it cope next gen?

By each passing generation of console games have shown a significant jumps in size of files on cassetts/cartridges/discs .

Ps1 Early games such as Resident Evil 1 with a file size of 310MB on one CD in 1996.
later on came games like Mgs1 with a file size of 780mb on two CD'S  in 1998
and then later Final fantasy 8 with a file size of 1.78GB on 3 CD'S in 1999

Ps2
Ps2 games such as hitman 2 with a file size of 1.56GB on one DVD
MGS2 with a file size of 4.30GB on one dvd (i was shocked this was bigger than ffx, probably all the cutscenes kojima loves)
FINAL FANTASY X with a file size of
4.19GB on one dvd

Xbox  Timesplitters 2 with a file size of 1.70gb on one DVD
Halo 2 With a file size of
4.39 gb on one DVD

Xbox 360  F.E.A.R. with a file size of 3.8 GB on DVD9
Fallout: New Vegas with a file size of
4.8 GB on DVD9
Final Fantasy XIII with a file size of
18.3 GB on three DVD9 discs Disc 1 - 5.9 GB  Disc 2 - 5.8 GB  Disc 3 - 6.6 GB
Lost Odyssey wth a file size of
21.7GB on four DVD9 discs Disc 1 - 5.4 GB Disc 2 - 4.6 GB Disc 3 - 5.8 GB Disc 4 - 5.9 GB
LA. Noir With a file size of
19.9GB  on three DVD9 Discs Disc1 - 6.6 GB Disc 2 - 6.6 GB Disc 3 - 6.7 GB

Ps3

Motor storm with a file size of
14.6 GB on one Blu ray disc
God of war 3 with a file size of  35 gb on one blu ray disc dual layer
MGS4 with a file size of 32GB on one Blu ray disc

Sony made a very daring/expensive decision of using the blu ray in the ps3 this Generationare But it seems to have paid off as they are currently safe to use blue ray into next gen as they have yet to fill the 50gb blue ray let alone use more than 1 disc, and they have already looked into making a 100gb blu ray disc.

I'm not sure what way microsoft are going to go next generation, I'm certain DVD9  is coming to the end on the 360 so it can't be used on the next console becuase we could be looking at 2-3 discs minimum for multiplat games let a lone high end exclusives So what are they going to do? digital distribution is an option but even Sony found out the hard way that people arent ready for it just yet, So do you think Microsoft are looking into a new format for their next console or do you think they will opt for an exsisting format such blu ray and can they use it?

either way I can see it to be costly for them this next jump.

It won't be costly at all as MS will use blu-ray.  Blu-ray was clearly not needed this gen and MS will make the appropriate move next gen to meet the needs of storage and development.

I'm pretty sure they might have to buy into blu ray, its not just as simple as saying they are going to use it next gen which leads me back to my point, it will be costly for them next gen

I believe flash is the way to go.

Microsoft must be looking into new disc formats! The dvds they use hold so little, and the disks get scratched so easily!

It really wouldn't surprise me if MS made their own format for the next Xbox.

MS believe DD is the way to go, they'll simply use a beefed up HDDVD, as long as it play DVD's it's fine.

Heck they could even go the flash route too....just have games on flash drives like USB's or something like that....it wouldn't be that expensive either seeing as you can pretty much get 16GB flash drives for $8 or so and it will only get cheaper from there.

I dont know if Microsoft should develop a new format. It may just cost as much as to pay royalties to Sony. Blu Ray is pretty god format right now that mostly all of the movie distributing companies have adopted

$8 for 16gb flash???? It costs only about $0.70 for a 25gb Blu Ray
