Forums - Microsoft - Kinect works - but it depends on the game

At gamescom I was able to try out several Kinect games, which was my biggest interest after the Nintendo games (I'm still a N fanboy). I was really surprised how well it can work, but just like with Wii games, it depends.

I tried out Kinect sports, Kinectimals, Dance Central and Joyride. I only write about how good Kinect works, not the graphics of the games, as I think you're able to get those impressions from the videos yourselves.

For me, Dance central was the best and most fun of those. It feels great, there's some very nice music in it, the dance moves are fun, and most importantly, it feels very responsive. The difference to Wii dance games like Just dance or We cheer (I bought the latter and enjoyed it very well, even though the controls aren't perfect) is enormous, and this alone should ensure success for the device with the casual crowd. I re-queued several times just to play again ^_^ But as most people didn't seem that interested to play it, it wasn't a very long wait. (Probably gamescom audience is too hardcore for this. But don't hesitate, try it out if you can!)

Joyride is a very nice game and it's my no. 2 of the Kinect games I played. It worked a lot better than I thought, and steering without a wheel isn't as weird as I thought it would be. Actually it feels quite similar to Mario Kart Wii with the wheel. It's pretty responsive, I had some problems at first, but it didn't take long to adjust. But I don't think it's as fun as Mario Kart, and it doesn't seem to deliver anything beyond that game.

Kinect sports was quite embarassing and didn't feel right. I tried running, bowling and lance throwing, and watched my mate play soccer. Running was a joke, it's just running as fast as you can on spot. With bowling my first try was doing it like Wii sports/Resort, but that didn't work too well, because Kinect isn't able to detect wrist turning - you have to make a more circular movement to give the ball a spin. I also wasn't able to really predict where the ball would go. It could have been just too short of time to adjust to the controls, but I didn't like it that much. Lance throwing was kinda nice, but I don't think it will last very long. Soccer was a little confusing, and it's very stop'n'go. My mate didn't like that at all. Conclusion: I don't think that will be a serious competitor to Wii sports/resort.

Kinectimals is retarded, and the controls don't work too well. You're able to see your virtual hands represented on screen when caressing your pet, but often their position don't match what you're doing. I don't think it matters for that game and for the target audience, though.

So, Kinect can work if the controls are done well. I'm interested in getting a 360 with it now. If I will depends on whether there will be other interesting games with nice controls, my wallet and how PS Move will pan out.

Thanks for the first hand report!

Sounds like pretty much what I expected and I still plan on getting it.  Dance Central and the Ubisoft fitness game are reason enough for me right now.  My girlfriend's 7 year old will LOVE Kinectimals as well I'm sure.

Your girlfriend will love Dance Central. I'm absolutely sure. Kinectimals should be fun for little kids, and probably girls more than boys, but I don't think it's for anybody else.
