Why are people buying Majora's Mask?

      x
      Because it's a great game.

Or let's turn things around and ask why people shouldn't buy Majora's Mask. What's your answer?

      on 12 March 2015

      x
Because it came out on the VC, on a console with a much larger installed base, in 2009. Does replacing some textures and marking it up to £30 make it more desirable?

      on 13 March 2015

      x
By the way I think it's a good game. It's the re-release policy, and that people fall for it, I have an issue with.

      on 13 March 2015

      x
The implementation of a higher and more stable framerate, and some gameplay adjustments make it more desirable than a VC release. The updated textures and character models make it obviously nicer to look at. It's a remake, not a remaster, so "falling for it" doesn't apply here.

Also, the original was released over 14 years ago, so there are plenty of people who could have missed it and now play it for the first time. Yes, there's the VC release, but this is a fifth generation game; an era from which most games have aged poorly. Doesn't put those games high on a have-to-play-this list.

      on 13 March 2015

      x

They turned me down for the job vs one other person on the basis she had been there five years and I had been there under a year. They were nice about it but essentially that was the reason. They even said they were "surprised" how well I did in the interview.

I'll be looking for private sector jobs starting now. I'd rather be overworked than underworked.

      x
Well, that's good news. Can't beat seniority often, but good to hear you performed well.

Nintendo's E3: are they not feeling financial pressure yet, or are they ignoring it?

      x
      Let's see...

      1. Game development usually takes 18-24 months.
      2. It wasn't until January of this year that Nintendo conceded the failure.

      on 10 June 2014

      x
I know the content pipeline couldn't change in that time, but the insular attitude was the same as last year. (Here's Miyamoto's crazy projects, let's spend 15mins on a quirky paintball thing)

      on 10 June 2014

      x
What did you expect them to do then? Without the necessary content, you can't really change much.

      on 10 June 2014

      x
1.Treehouse/youtube are great, but people watch and read about the main conference mostly. Swap some indie content/announcements/trailers into the Direct and take all the developer interviews out.

      2. At least one major core announcement, in no-gameplay trailer form - Metroid, full 3D Mario, something. Or even not an extra game at all -Starfox could have been this if presented as a full game with a flashy trailer.

      3. A commitment to bringing a ton of past games onto VC in a limited timeframe (not just, whenever they feel like it). The games already exist, put them up there.

      on 10 June 2014

      x
And what does any of this have to do with reacting to financial pressure?

      on 10 June 2014

      x
Some kind of message tone change with the existing content or no-gameplay previews of future content was possible. There was none.

      on 11 June 2014

      x
Soleron, what are you going on about? This community and others agree that Nintendo had the best E3 this year and likely over the last few years. Also Splatoon looked awesome.

      on 11 June 2014

      x
Alright I'm handing in my Nintendo badge then.

      on 12 June 2014

      x
You just need to accept that you will sit out this generation. If you don't like the 3DS and Wii U at all, then that's not going to change, because Nintendo will try to satisfy the people who like those systems instead of trying to appeal to a broader market which would most likely result in a lose-lose situation, because the hardware the games are on is still unappealing and thus too big of a roadblock to ever get past.

As you can see from the reactions to this E3 on forums, owners of Nintendo systems seem to be surprisingly happy. That's because Nintendo is on track to succeed at their final mission for the 3DS and Wii U, but in turn it also means that the people who really dislike the 3DS and Wii U can safely write those systems off.

      on 12 June 2014

      x
Elaborating on the second half of the lose-lose situation: If Nintendo tried to change course now, they would likely lose the support of current 3DS and Wii U owners.

      x
      Alright, I understand. Thanks.

Supposedly Wal-Mart is desperately understaffed due to their wage practices. So i guess if you're willing to put up with real crap at first, climbing the ladder wouldn't be too difficult.

      on 01 April 2014

      x
Is that the job you want spurge? Like, after I get two years experience here I could then double my pay by moving to London in finance, but I won't do that because I value my mental state more than my earnings.

How can I best argue that next-gen is not and will not increase third party software sales?

People outside here keep telling me it's cyclical and software will ramp up somehow.

      x
You will have to wait until the hype has died down for both the PS4 and One. So far the industry decline could be pushed on Nintendo, but now that that has bottomed out (3DS and Wii U weren't doing great in 2013), any further declines will be on Sony and Microsoft.

Interviewed for technician job last week. The job involved working on samples in a back room and sending electronic reports to other people in the company. In other words no human interaction and a set method of work. I was the only candidate and the job description didn't require experience.

Feedback: They agree I would be able to do the role and have all the necessary skills, but they're looking for someone "less nervous". Rather than take me they're withdrawing the position altogether and will readvertise for someone with experience, paying presumably $10-15,000 more for the same tasks.

      x
Not sure what to say to that. Unless they felt that your nervousness was due to your lack of experience rather than social anxiety. I'm surprised they bothered to give you feedback, though. "No feedback, no speculation" is commonplace in America, because its easy to infer or imply some sort of discrimination out of any "why didn't i get this job?" answer and then file an equal opportunity complaint just for spite.

      on 19 December 2013

      x
Yeah. I'm amazed that they told me what they were doing with the job afterwards/how many other candidates

To me it looked like they had no idea what to expect when explicitly saying the job was suitable for a graduate.

I don't know what I can do about perceived nervousness in job interviews. I felt fine and I answered well enough to show I could do the job. It's like people expect you to be outgoing and enthusiastic as well, which I just cannot sustain/fake and ought not to be required for roles that don't interact much.

      on 19 December 2013

      x
Or it could just be that they had no expectations, and decided that fresh grads weren't the right fit. Job-hunting is a lot like romantic relationships in a lot of ways, down to the fact that the other party often isn't sure what they want, so even if you're perfect for them, they may simply not want anyone at a given time.

      on 19 December 2013

      x
      True.

      on 19 December 2013

      x
I estimate that about half of the jobs on the website listings don't actually exist, for reasons like they just want to appear like they have positions, or they have someone in mind already, or that they're not sure they even want anyone.

Seems unfair to waste my time and money on THREE rounds of interviews for non-existent jobs though.

Having watched a few playthrough vids of ALBW and 3DW for the soundtracks, I'm disappointed it's still all remixes. These are premier productions for their respective platforms and deserve a mostly new soundtrack to establish a unique identity.

      x
Apart from that, 3DW looks better in gameplay than I expected and I will be picking it up whenever the cost of the Wii U is not a factor (either when other games come out, or it's £99 because Nintendo discontinues it in Europe)

Would I have any grounds for believing that Nintendo's reported digital sales numbers are made up? With the amount reported and the crazy margins they have, it should be visible as profit.

They're totally unverifiable as each being a real purchase.

      x
      Wouldn't that be fraud?

      on 19 November 2013

      x
First off, how come that you are back?

Secondly, no. Their digital sales revenue isn't that big and they are burning money on Wii U hardware. Also, since the Wii U is selling at such low levels, it causes additional losses for Nintendo. Their entire workforce has to be paid no matter what happens, so low volume is a problem.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
      I asked to be unbanned.

I need to go and meet some of these 20%+ of people who buy full price digital Nintendo games when the disc can be next day shipped to them for the lower street price. And ask them just, why.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
And they let you come back? That's not how permabans for being a bad guy are supposed to work.

You are from the UK, so your perspective is skewed. Your country is infamous for its price wars among retailers, but that's not the normal elsewhere. Still hard to believe that there are people who pay the same for a digital copy as they would for a physical one. But in the cases of developing markets it's perfectly understandable; for them digital is usually (significantly) cheaper.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
Yeah, they did. I'm not going to question it.

Good points. I guess there are places where digital is cheaper.

      on 19 November 2013

So I win the Pikmin bet and the M&L bet will be pretty close?

      x
i already won the M+L . Nintendo reported sales and Both it and Donkey Kong 3D has over 1mil.
And since you were banned i took two other bets instead.

Oh yeah, Pikmin 3 still has another 8 months to sell

      on 19 November 2013

      x
      What was the bet?

      on 19 November 2013

      x
      it was 2 bets.

      1. I win if Pikmin 3 sells 1mil copies within a year of release (deadline mid july)

      2. I win if Mario+Luigi Dream team sells 1mil before the years end.

the second one i won, he was banned so i erased my bets with him and took 2 others! Anyway M+L sold over 1.3mil even though here shows it around 800k

      on 19 November 2013

      x
No, you can't change M+L to include digital. It's vgchartz numbers we bet on.

You're not going to concede the Pikmin? There's no way it can sell to 1m even with 8 months.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
If VGC adjusts so retail >1m then you win yes

      on 19 November 2013

      x
we never stated vgchart numbers, we just made a bet, vgchart has it undertracked by over 600k, so i win. if you dont want to admit it, thats on you. it sold over 1.3mil by Sept 30th, meaning there is no way you win.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
I do not trust Nintendo's digital numbers.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
well then, now i kno not to take your word. Trying to find the best way to suit yourself? Next time when you make a bet be specific. I won and thats all, dont wrry about sig control i dont want it

      on 19 November 2013

      x
No. I don't trust them independent of bet. I think they're magic fairy dust numbers.

You should also have been specific that it wasn't VGC. I think it's fair to assume it was.

fwiw if I win the pikmin one I also don't care about sig control either. The point of a bet is to show you're serious about believing something will sell/not sell. And neither of those games could be called a success.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
i won the 1st bet, its a success cuz after less than 2 months of release it sold 1.3mil. if thats not a success then wat is?
As for the pikmin 3 bet, its already sold over 500k, it still has 8 months to go.

Obviously you dont care about official numbers as nintendo stated them. if they didn't they i would have gone buy vgchart numbers. M+L will sell over 2mil by years end. Major succes to me

      on 19 November 2013

      x
Both of those targets are impossible. By anyone's numbers.

      on 19 November 2013

      x
yes your so smart, M+L was impossible too right? but wow look at that, you were wrong. You'll be wrong again wen it hits 2mil

      on 19 November 2013

      x
Show me where I said M+L 1m was impossible. I believed it to be unlikely.

Pikmin 3 +500k in 8 months is absolutely and completely impossible.
