This weird entry in the Zelda franchise had everything perfectly set for a disaster. The different artstyle and direction aside, this game suffered from a terrible roster of dungeons, a bunch of unmemorable boss fights, a useless and boring filler quest at the end, and average pacing - however, despite all of its shortcomings, this game blew me away with its unparalleled atmosphere and sense of adventure. Despite the overload of boring content the main portions of the game and its story offered, it always felt good to play it because the atmosphere was so good it put you right inside the game and it made the stakes always feel high. The Wind Waker truly is a game you can't judge by objectively analyzing its individual elements, because in the end the game shines with the combination of those elements.
