32 and 64 GBs sounds way too big for the Wii and will probably be too expensive as well. I could see them putting a HDD size of no more than 20 GB at the most.

Then again this is a rumour so this might not be true anyways.

HAH, I got a Western Digital portable external hard drive the size of the first iPod (you can stick this external into your pocket!) and it's 320 GB. I got it for $103. Not a bad price. A better deal than the SD Memory Cards the Wii has. $24.99 - $34.99 for 2 GB cards? Pffft...

Where in the world do you shop for SD cards?  2 GB SD cards are just under $5.

Also, you can get a 1TB HDD for $99.

IF the use the number 32 and 64... it's because they are going to use the pen drives technology in order to keep it as small as possible...
The will be like little white kingston pen drives... now the 64gb are like $100 on ebay... but i am sure they could be sell for a lot less money...

Thanks Viper1 for all the cool information you gave us in this thread..
Thanks

Glad to see I'm not the only one who picked up on this.

USB flash drives are plenty fast, and pretty cheap too. It's definitely a possible solution, if it can be made to meet Nintendo's requirements.

Yes, this. My post was kinda confusing, but you understood.

The sizes are "weird" because the "conventional" HDs are 20, 30, 40, 60, 80GB... I've never seen a HD of 32 or 64 GB, unless they're SSDs or some kind of flash memory.

Technically, even those that are 20, 30, 40, 60, etc...are not what is listed. Those are marketing numbers because they are easier for consumers to grasp. The actual numbers are slightly smaller. The actual binary volume of a 100 GB HDD is 93 GiB. RAM is the same by the way.

SSD's have mostly been marketed using the proper binary number system (multiples of 2) which is why you see sizes such as 32 and 64 GB.

Yes, sure, everybody know this also... Well, the point is made, there's no magnetic HD of (real or fake) sizes of 32 or 64 GB, meaning that, if the rumor is true, it's an SSD or flash memory (in card or not).

meh, just open up to the biggest SD cards and allow games and other such items to be playable from them.

Nintendo is releasing some TV, anime or something like that channels in Japan, isn't it? Maybe the hard drive is something related to that.

Those are supposed to be streaming, just like the videos on the Nintendo channel. While I suppose they could provide the option to save to a drive, Wiis shouldn't need any additional hardware to take advantage of the service.

Waaaay too big, even if it is cheaper, SDHC would be even cheaper, and lead to similar results of space

IF the hardware also supports SDHC.

Otherwise you can update the software but the hardware still won't recognize it and more commonly used SD card readers used in 2005-2006 did not support SDHC and be much more costly,PS3 used SDHC but Wii doesn't.

DSi does since now SDHC is now the standard card reader.

May explain why the rumour is talking about a USB HDD instead of a firmware update.
