Not sure how many of you are familiar with NEOGAF, but the site owes much of it's popularity and notoriety to the fact that certain members freely shared NPD data every month for a while. Though I never joined, I've gone there for the occasional breaking news, but mostly for the humor that many members inject into countless threads. Anyhoo, those days are over, at least for me. To make a long story short, NPD came down on the members posting their numbers, some were defiant, then shamelessly laid themselves over the NPD's knee, and took a hardline approach to members who stuck to their guns on the matter. In the end vgchartz was born and will eventually surpass NPD as the everyday man's source for sales numbers. However, the NPD will always have a place in this world, as someone has to charge investors thousands of dollars a pop for the numbers(let's not forget that their own numbers are routinely adjusted and eyed with suspicion by some). Back to GAF, the big day on GAF for me is NPD day. Not for the numbers, as I get those from sites dedicated to news, but for the hilarious gifs and images that members post in response to the numbers. So I check the thread for the hilarious gifs, only to see that mod Sonycowboy is banning anyone who posts images/gif in the thread. He justifies this by saying they add nothing of value to the thread. Hmmm, they add nothing of value kind of like like 95% of the posts in the very same thread? Sonycowboy owes his notoriety(and possibly his mod-ship) to the NPD threads and numbers they used to throw around. Now his NPD threads serve no purpose other than the great gifs and images that the GAF community shares in the thread. Now he's banning people for giving his NPD thread the only relevance they had left? Maybe it wasn't his call...but I seriously doubt it. It sickens me to see a guy/site ride the success of the glorious old NPD threads, become a mouthpiece & apologist for the NPD, then take arrogantly kill the thread in the end.
