Sorry I am late to the party and didn't read though the 5 pages of comments, but while it was stated that XBL gross intake was more than 1 billion, it is suggested that MS probably only sees half that in net income. Everything from taxes, hosting services, power and cooling for servers, internet bandwidth, music/movie/game royalties and developer payouts is deducted from that 1 billion. So while 1 billion is an impressive number, the final result isn't quite that impressive. The OP says there was no spin, well you're wrong.

Yeah, imagine if they didn't have subscription fees and such to offset these costs.
The article doesn't mention how much MS made from XBLA. It does mention the revenue, though.
