Forums - Gaming Discussion - Opinion: Two Years In - How The Wii Has Failed

I think the upcomming release of the Wii MotionPlus shows that Nintendo is aware how the (original) Wiimote has fallen short of what people expected it to be; in fact, since it was (probably) worked on for 6 months to a year before they announced it, it demonstrates that Nintendo was aware (very) early on of the problem.

Beyond that, when the Wii shows even the smallest benefits (Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime and Boom Blox as examples) it is nearly impossible to think of playing these games with a controller again.

This^^^Man, I'm just going to start Parroting people, lol.

The Reginator had stated previously that they wanted to add the tech from Motion+ in the original application, but it did fit their business model. Nintendo probably was hoping against hope that the Wii could hold out long enough so the price of the needed improvements for the Wiimote came down.

They rolled the dice and came up 7's.

The article has a point but I think it fails to recgonize the successes. Tiger Woods is great on the Wii. It'll be the true realization of the dream if they add WM+ and Balance Board support next year.

Games like Mecury Meltdown, Dewy and Kororinpa can FINALLY be played like they were always meant to be.

And I do feel the tactile feel of making certain motions really add to gameplay - when used properly. Like tossing grenades, checking opponets in Strikers or when used games like Cooking Mama and Zack & Wiki.

However he's right, it hasn't added much, if anything, to most games. Largely because it isn't really 1:1, and largely because developers are making the same game with waggle added in instead of making the game from the ground up with motion in mind.

In the end the Wii is less than the dream of what the Wii would be. Perhaps WM+ will fix this. But only if developers can let go of archaic game designs and put the effort into making great games and not quick cash-ins.

Proud Owner of  a Wii and Xbox 360 and a PS3(When I get the money)

Just give us a new Zelda game and all will be forgiven

I have to disagree with this article. The author seems to be in a dream land or something. Maybe he's on drugs. I'd vote for the latter.

On topic, The Wii is a console. Consoles are only good as the development teams that are working on the games. As we all know, third parties have not really done much for the Wii. Yet it has still managed to capture causal gamers better than any home console before it. And it still selling at an alarming rate. It's not the fault of the Wii or Nintendo that 3rd parties have stuck to doing the same thing as last gen. The games will come if it's only done by Nintendo themselves.

It's odd that there is so many anti Wii articles yet the HD consoles have not delivered on the Hollywood movie like experiences or ushered in the advanced AI. Thus for their power has just been utilized to dazzle fanboys with eye candy. Shouldn't these powerful consoles also be used to bring in new gameplay or is it only exclusive to the Wii? Why aren't Journalist like the aforementioned drug user or IGN asking for new experiences? Oh wait this would require developers to take the time to figure out how to incorporate new gameplay ideas into their existing franchises and would also require even more time to create a new IP. Silly Wii haters never think that new ideas or IPs take time. They are so quick to rush in a call the Wii a failure but never acknowledge that 3rd parties have failed the Wii.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

He's welcome to his opinion, but mine is not in line with his. Of my 3 home consoles the Wii gets the most play, and although the PS3 and 360 have a couple games up to the quality of the Wii's best in the genres I like, they don't have nearly as many. I could not be just a 360 and PS3 gamer or even just an HD gamer (excluding PC), but I probably could have made it through the whole gen on just my Wii if I wasn't such a collector when it comes to video games.

I agree with this completely.

The Wii is no PS2 games wise....I only have 3 games for it...and I don't intend to buy any in teh future. Games wise it is really Gamecube 2....imo.

everyone says 3rd parties will come....but they have been saying that for 2 years now. If the wii doesn't give me a very good reason to own it soon....it may be replaced by a 360 at a profit (as the wii will sell for loads of $$$ at xmas)

ditto, although I already have a x360.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I really only agree with the fact that it doesn't really make games more immersive. You could easily put Wii games on other consoles. I don't agree it's a failure.

See you have to be specfic WHICH games...Yes No More Heroes as orginally it was planned for the 360, but a game like Zack & Wiki, or World Of Goo, you could not place on another console.
