Pacther is all over the map.

Frankly, I think he says stuff like "Nintendo won E3," when most video game journalists believe that Sony won, and "the PS3 will win this generation," when that isn't close to happening right now, just because it stirs discussion and grabs a bunch of attention for him.

Would we have posted this if he said: "Sony wins! I agree with most other game journalists!" No, we wouldn't have, which is why he didn't say that.

Most mainstream Journos think Ninty won

Right, but gaming journalists generally do not, and Pachter is much more one of them than he is mainstream (he's technically not a journalist at all, but if we have to put him in one category or another...).

Again, would we be talking about this if Pachter had said that Sony had won? Probably not. He wants attention, and he got it.

so why do we keep giving it to him (the attention)? we may call him a media whore or something but every one of his predictions and opinions are looked at closely and scutinized and every story concerning the console race always seem to have a quote from him which means the reporters were seeking him out. So what if he said Nintendo won? I agree with him about the crappy E3 show. Even if someone did win, the victory was too weak to even matter. Say Sony won. Were you wowed by them? I certainly wasn't at least not like last year's E3 when Nintendo took the show.

I like people who bash Pachter when what he says doesn't suit him but praise him when it does.

I like when people troll every thread that is vaugley pro-Nintendo.

But this isn't a prediction, it's just his opinion on E3. That is entirely different.

As far as predictions go, the guy is always way off base. But he has a point here.

I find myself disagreeing with Prachter YET AGAIN. I love Nintendo but Sony really had the strongest showing (not that any of them are good). There is one thing Prachter is good for: Whatever he says, assume the opposite and you will be right 95% of the time.

Patcher = Captain Obvious.

His opinions are made after the fact about events, which any of us can easily draw our own conclusions from the result of things.

His job is to FORETELL these events with a percentage higher than 50%, which seems hard for him to do as his opinions change drastically time and time again. Now I'm not bashing him for changing his opinion, I'm glad he is open to doing so, the problem lies in the fact that his analysis goes which ever way the wind blows.

As far as I am concerned flipping a coin is a much better predictor of what is going to happen in the future, and I agree that this is nothing more than an opinion and so far most of his predictions were either obvious or way off target.

Proud owner of the following gaming devices:

PC, XBox 360, Wii, PS2, DS, PS3

Pachter had three choices:

1) Say MS won. There would be disagreement and talk, but nothing that would get him any special attention. MS is kind of like Switzerland: who cares.

2) Say Sony won. This would have caused a lot of buzz and gotten him a lot of attention, but he would have hordes of Nintendo fans on him along with MS fans with only a little support from Sony fans.

3) Say Nintendo won. He would have the nearly 10 million Nintendo fans on his side, the MS fans probably wouldn't care a lot because the Wii is another category, and there wouldn't be much from Sony fans because there aren't a lot of them (sorry, but true).

He clearly chose Nintendo since that would be the best for him, it doesn't really matter who did better when all three were so close. Pachter is a hack and you just really shouldn't listen to anything he says.

I don't care much for Pachter. He's all over the map. As far as E3 though, I think the majority of game journalists liked Sony's conference the best. They showed a lot of games and their games are such eye candy. However I do believe Nintendo made the biggest impression with the mainstream media. This is backed up by articles by Reuters, The Washington Post, and others which empasize the Wii. So Nintendo won over the people they were concentrating on and Sony won their demographic.

What's Pachter really saying here... I've added some comments for clarity.

"I'd have to say that Nintendo won," Pachter said in regards to the most exiting or disruptive conference this year. "They had new hardware and decent software introductions."

...which is why I've spent the last year insisting they will finish a distant third in the console race.

But Pachter didn't think that way until news broke on Friday that the new, cheaper PS3s would soon be discontinued. "Sony had seized the show until the 'discontinued' 60Gb issue arose, and that hurt them by confusing their price cut."

...because I'm required to change my opinions at least three times a week.

"Microsoft had decent software to show, but no price cut," he added suggesting the much rumored price drop would have been a good thing for Xbox 360 being that its sales have gradually declined in recent months according to NPD.

I hate Microsoft because they proved my latest price-cutting prediction untrue.

"It wasn't a very impressive show overall, so it's not like anyone was a 'loser,'" he maintained.

Group hug time - sunshine and rainbows all around.

On the topic of how next year's E3 could be improved, Pachter noted that he liked the intimacy and accessiblity of game demonstrations, but missed the grandeur of last year's showing. "I think that the spectacle creates a vibe in and of itself, and it makes the overall show much more fun," he said. "This show was not fun at all."

Pachter's latest tidbit of industry analysis - this E3 was not fun. How could we ever function without him...

The fact remains, this guy is a moron. I laughed the hardest where the article refered to him as a 'respected industry analyst'
