Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are games becoming too violent?

Cryoakira- I agree, I think games should be treated the way films are when it comes to violence. I don't know what a T rating restricts, here in the UK I think Saw got an 18 certificate, and a game with that level of violence would also get an 18 certificate.

I think games should be rated on the same criteria as films and given an age rating based on their content, and should not be sold to anyone underage. That is how it works in the UK and I think it's the only viable method of distributing games.

"Too Violent" is not a term I can easily define because I really don't think it is the violence that is the problem ...

I am the youngest of 4 children and with the age difference in my family I was exposed to a lot of violent content (from movies mostly) at a very young age; when I was in kindergarden I saw Nightmare on Elm Street, and (for the most part) I saw a horror movie about every week growing up.

Lately I have become really "disturbed" (for lack of a better word) by horror movies that are popular. Producers/Directors and screenwriters are taking generally good (and scary) ideas and creating movies with the skill of a third rate pornographer. The movies are sold based off of special effects and shock value rather than what is truely scary/interesting about a the movie; rather than exploring the concept that "you can buy anything if you have enough money" you get to see a girl get her eye burned out with a blow-torch.

The same basic problem exists in all forms of popular media including videogames; personally, I don't see it as being a problem with the quantity of violence as much as the entire movie/games is focused on the violence rather than on something more meaningful.

I was just wondering, do you think movies like saw or games like GTA would be more or less of a problem if they were done to the old Benny Hill music?

PS - If you don't know the music I am talking about check out the music in this video....
