You know how many times we've been to the moon by now?

There are tons of U.S. and Soviet probes and space junk that crashed into the moon before they could get them to land correctly.

In fact, the Apollo Program put Americans on the moon on:

July 16th, 1969
November 14th, 1969
January 31st, 1971 (first color video images)
July 26th, 1971 (3-day stay, first use of lunar rover)
April 16th, 1972
December 7th, 1972 (we brought a fucking geologist to prove it was the moon!)

We kept going to the moon over and over to try to one-up the Soviets and show off our superior technology, same reason we nuked Japan. The Cold War's over. Everything we did for a few decades was to show the world we were better than the Soviets.

not really the only reason, of course. the US spent more so the soviets spent more which made them poorer which assisted the canadians in destroying the soviet union.

So many things wrong with this thread.

We landed on the moon.
We did not bomb Japan to show we were better then Russia. We did it to end the war. We didn't care about beating Russia in WWII, they were on our side :p. That started later.
We stopped because it cost a lot of money, and the US got everything they needed out of the deal. Americans stopped caring about it.
The Russian space program was not superior. They made better rockets. This helps a lot when getting things into space. That's where anything they did better stopped. Getting a live man that far away... and then getting him back, is very very hard. They never had the technology to do it.

When will we go back? When we can make a space lift, so 50 years or so.
