Forums - Sony Discussion - Unboxed: Sony Play TV

It's unlikely this will come to the US because the cable and satellites control the access to content. Tivo was pretty much forced to cut a deal with Comcast or go out of business. They were supposed to implement Cable Card, however the support has been terrible destroying any chance for third party products to succeed.

In countries like the UK, they have laws that allow companies open access. In the US it's all in the hands of the cable and satellite companies. You can't decrypt their signal without their permission, which they refuse to grant because they want to sell their own hardware.

The only way Sony can get this to work in the US is to bend over to the cable companies and even MS is unwilling to do that.

not really most companies do that to make money, but you can easily record tv with many things, such as vhs, dvds, and even computers with tuner cards

HD content from the cable and satellite companies are all encrypted. The only content that is not encrypted are analog standard definition and over the air SD/HD broadcasts.

Just a question as I am really interested in this.

If I were to get the ps3 with this live TV.

Would I be able to receive free view channels?

Would I need a separate satellite dish or not.

I live in Ireland.

We get sky if you have a dish and subscribe.

Thanks for any answers in advance.

Off topic.

Wasn’t there talk about this on 360?

Whatever happened to that?

It was some deal with British telecom.

Yeah, I imagine this would either work with free-to-air channels - or a single signal (whatever is going into your TV, like any digital recorder). No channel selection, EPG (etc) on the PS3 - just a basic "record" function.

Those bigger hard disks will be very necessary for people using this.

Nice, Good find Reask

hmm this works with any digital cable? If yes then instant buy. It would have been the best thing ever (TM) if you could have copied shows freely from it. But its still quite nice.

That is what I would like confirmed I would hate to get it only to find I need a dish or cable.

I know shams has said it should work.

I am a bit of a layman on things like this myself.

It's pretty much the same as if you bought a freeview box.

So, yes, you get all the freeview channels.

No, you don't need a satellite dish, just a tv aerial.

Not sure what you mean by "we get sky if you have a dish and subscribe", but if you mean will it allow you to record sky tv if you currently receive sky tv then I believe the answer is no.

Thanks for that drpunk.

Sorry about the sky thing I meant in Ireland sky is available.

I have to say this is making me want a ps3.
