In short, the goal for Sony shouldn't be to suddenly outsell the Wii in Japan -- it should be to stop the Wii's snowball from growing any bigger.

But how would they do that? Which game has potential to move systems after EG5 (I expect an 80 % hardware boost in the first week)? Is there any big or semi-big game left coming out this year?

Oh, I'm not saying it's likely. I'm not even sure HOW they would do it. I'm only saying that would be the first step, if they were going to do anything at all.

EG5 is going to bring in a great 1st week hardware boost and should surpass Gundam Musou as the system's top seller. It really can't do much more than that, so we just have to keep hoping that Sony will drop the price.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

I agree with this, although it's unlikely that Sony will drop the price any further in Japan. As has already been mentioned, Japan has the highest HDTV adoption rate in the world and the price of the PS3 is already 400 dollars. Those bullets have already been fired.

The good thing for Sony with EG5 is that it is a casual game, unlike NGS, so that its audience is outside the current PS3 audience which should help sell more hardware.

The bad thing is that it is a casual game and few casual players are ready to pay PS3 prices for a casual game so the boost is likely to be small and of short duration.

So if, as it is likely to be the case, EG5 fails to be PS3's savior in Japan like many PS3 fanboys have been saying, what is the next title that they will tout as savior?

"I do not suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it"

EG5 is a really tough call. Depends a lot in who actually bought it in the past. Hardcore or casuals. Anyway, the ratio should stay the same or maybe lower a bit. Expect it to increase if Nintendo gets more shipments in future because there is nothing until FFXIIi that can make a difference.

People don't seem to understand that when America and Europe get a price drop Japan will not.  It will be 2-3 years minimum before Japan sees a PS3 price drop.

The issue with DQS vs. EG5 for hardware sales:

Unless Nintendo has intentionally held units back for DQS (which I doubt), there's no way that it'd maintain a 6:1 lead. If anything, it'll be back to 4:1 or so.

The reason the ratios have become stronger with the Wii sales is NOT because the Wii is selling better, it's because the PS3 is selling worse. If that trend gets bucked for a few weeks with EG5, then the ratios will decrease.

Lets say it looks like this: PS3 averages 9k units a week until EG5, then moves 35k over the next, and last week of July. That'd equal out to 62k in 4 weeks, an increase of 21,000 units over last month. The Wii would have a much harder time to get a proportional (basically 200% increase), as that'd never happen. Nintendo can't hold back 140,000 units for DQS's launch.

The ratio should be around 4.5:1 for July, and maybe 4.0:1 for August. I just wonder what the ratio for the 360:PS3 is in Japan :-p

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

"no game coming out this year"

I dont know if EG5 will suddenly help dramatically PS3 sales (even if there are 300k preorders).

But do you really think that japanese people dont care about Lair ? Unchartred ? or even the massive amount of multiplateform game that are coming on Xbox360 or PS3 ?

Time to Work !

Actually, the Wii sales in Japan HAVE gotten better overall. Not by a considerable amount, but it's there.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.
