Forums - Gaming Discussion - Scalpers get Scalped!

Since the Wii is the only console out there selling out right now... I just wanted to post this as I think it's funny. http://cgi.ebay.com/Brand-New-Nintendo-Wii-w-Red-Steel-Ultimate-Marvel_W0QQitemZ300078616568QQihZ020QQcategoryZ62054QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Wii+RedSteel+Ultimate Alliance. That would cost me 350$ + 9.25% tax. = 415$ SOLD for 355+shipping. That was the setup I got for my Wii. (I got zelda too) Coulda saved 10-20$... ROFL. I'll post more funny links to E-Bay Scalpers... losing money. ;D

That's nothing. Now THIS is a scalping! Canadian construction worker bets on the PS3 and loses big 23-year old Derek O'Brien thought he had the perfect plan on getting enough money to buy his girlfriend an engagement ring. Back in November, he purchased Sony PlayStation 3 consoles in the hopes of selling them for a tidy profit just before Christmas. However, it's now February and O'Brien still hasn't sold the consoles. Can you imagine the dinner conversation between this couple? According to the Globe and Mail, O'Brien camped outside the Walmart all night until the 7AM opening. He bought one console for the regular $659 price and another one from a scalper for $1800. He hoped to sell the consoles through eBay, but made a fatal mistake. The PS3 was fetching upwards of $3000 to $5000 in the days after the launch , but O'Brien believed supplies would remain tight and that he could get even more if he waited until just before Christmas. He guessed wrong, horribly wrong. Sony started shipping more consoles to stores which made O'Brien's consoles rather ordinary. He then tried selling them through eBay to UK gamer, but the auction site pulled the ad and added insult to injury by suspending his account. O'Brien is now out more than $2400 on two unopened Sony PlayStation3 consoles. He even missed out on a full refund for returning the console within 30 days.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

He got OWNED. However he only lost ~1200. (the consoles still sell for 550-600 on ebay) They are hard to find. There are no PS3 or Wii in Knoxville TN. (Wii soldout.. *duh*... PS3 soldout... WTF I thought it was readily avaliable 2 months ago?)

There were at least two PS3 systems in the display case at the local Target today when I stopped by checking for a Wii. There might have been more boxes there, but I didn't look too closely. The PS3s were there Sunday night as well, when I was talking with the employees about the next day's Wii launch. Regional differences I suppose, perhaps we should start up a console relocation program? Still, $1,200 is a lot to lose when it's your engagement ring fund. Think about it in terms of monthly net salary. Certainly more painful than $10. I'd even feel sorry for him if he were not trying to scalp even more money off others. Scalpers are certainly not taking any pity on those who want a few Wii console these days, even 2 months after launch.

You're not trying to buy one now I imagine. I have four co-workers and friends who want one, but can't find one in a store. This is over two months after the release, and in large part due to scalpers. What is happening is bottom feeding, via the creation of an artificial shortage. I look forward to Nintendo closing the gap WRT what the scalpers can afford to buy, such that they're forced to sell the consoles at a large loss.
