Forums - Microsoft Discussion - X360 pro price drops to $299 to get ready for the 60G

Hey guys guess what.

MS has now had 4 price cuts.

1 last year. 1 in europe. 1 now. and one later this year.... damn that makes sony's 2 look pathetic. /rolls eyes.

wow ms did the same thing sony did... alot of people laughed at what sony did back then whos laughin now?

We laughed at Sony then because they were full of shit. They denied that the price drop was a clearance sale (MS admits it upfront). They denied that they were doing horribly (and they were). They denied that the initial models and price points were a mistake (and they were).

Can people not see the difference between publicly phasing out a nearly 3 year old model for something more up to date, as opposed to scrapping two consoles less than a year after launch, all the while denying that there was anything wrong?

Maybe that's why you laughed at Sony.  The point is, this long rumored price cut really isn't.

Same price for 3x the memory is a great deal.
Amazon has reduced the price of the Elite as well - but it'll most likely be temporary.

I see this as a price-cut.

At the OEM level, the price difference between a 20gb and 60gb drive is probably less than $10. So it's not much more value if that's the only difference.

You may be the only one.

When isn't their a long rumored price cut?  Their has been a really long rumor going on that PS3 will get a pricecut as well.  The only console that isn't rumored to have a pricecut is Wii and thats because it's still selling out in many US markets.

No doubt, and that's why I'm a bit annoyed with MS. However, to say that this is MS doing exactly what Sony did (as many are) is ignoring the facts.

somewhere i ehared that sony is negotiating with harddisk manufacorers too about bigger hds so i would expect them to bring bigger hds too when they bring out the next revamped model with the shrinked gfx chip and i guess also without a real pricedrop.

Oh right, where did you hear that?

seen it on a german tech news page when they announced the gfx chip shrink for this fall, they said there that a sony spokesman told them some time ago that they were negotiating with hd manufactorers. the author of the news hinted at the possibility that the cost reduction will probably not lead to a price cut, but that sony might instead give increased hd sizes to customers.

that all makes some sense to me too, a 20-40gb bigger hd will probably cost less than 10$ more at these order amounts, its an easy component to exchange which does not add the need for any new designs, and finally they are planning to launch a video download service this summer which will probably also benifit from increased hd sizes.
