Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What % of solid Wii titles are rehashed/ported N64/GC games?

I owned an N64 and a Gamecube. So when I decided not to get a Wii the main reasoning was because I've been playing Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Zelda games for years. Looking at the list of top games for Wii you see a lot of the same killer apps that were on Gamecube. If they aren't a straight up port then they are very similar. If you think this is totally false take a look at this:

http://wii.ign.com/index/reviews.html?constraint.floor.article.overall_rating=9&constraint.return_all=is_true&sort.attribute=article.overall_rating&sort.order=desc

Adding to this is the fact that Wii's power is similar to last generation consoles. So while yes you do see rehashes on PS360 most of the time those games are leaps and bounds beyond their predecessor, (at least graphically). Compare the graphics GTA4 Vs. GTA 3, then do the same with Smash Bros. Melee Vs. Smash Bros. Brawl.

Do you think that this will affect Wii sales going into the future? Will it get harder and harder for Wii to compete with PS360 in the coming years as Wii software looks more and more dated? Or does the casual market have lots of room to grow?

Any other Nintendo fanboys out there who had N64 and Gamecube but decided not to buy a Wii, (at least not yet). If so why?

Um while there are alot of games that follow a very very similar formula there are many that don't. For example smash bros, and Mario kart are exceptable because they have online, Twilight Princess WAS a game cube game, and was pretty different from previous Zelda titles in term of cinematic, but in terms of game play it was the same. I would wait until wii Zelda comes out to judge this, smg was a lot different from previous Mario games, it was more linear than sunshine, and also had far different controls, but you notice that the game was much more fun, and the controls were fun also. Metroid Prime 3 allowed for "superior"(imo) controls to prime 1 and 2 and pretty much summed up the prime series nicely. So I would say no, wii titles seem to have changed much more than sequels to previous games on other consoles, and imo its a far different experience.

Edit: ALso it will get more different as time goes by, because developers and nintendo know how to utilize the wiimote to it's full potential more.

Uh, Brawls graphics were as big an improvement over Melee as GTAIV was over GTAIII, the same for Twilight Princess over Wind Waker (arguably, since the art styles were completely different) and Galaxy over Sunshine, not to mention each game being either being much more innovative, adding a lot more features or just being bigger on a large scale then their predecessors. I honestly think the two GTA's, since they're the example you want to pull, changed less than the titles I've mentioned.

Leetgeek, did Nintendo kill your puppy? You seem to hate them for some reason.

Focusing on graphics as the only way for games to improve is a dead end ... I remember a point where I upgraded my sound card every year because the advances in technology were so great that it was worthwhile; eventually the Soundblaster Live came out and (after that point) there was little need to upgrade the soundcard anymore. We're about to hit that point with graphics technology and if someone didn't focus on something beyond how pretty games were, the industry would collapse.

Hmm, I've seen people mention N64 games rather a lot lately when talking about Wii games.. It may just be me, but, errm, are there really ports of N64 games being released on Wii? Can't imagine. Of course I'm not talking about VC games.

Also, graphics won't matter a pair of dingo's kidneys where Wii userbase growth is concerned. Clearly, the vast majority of consumers doesn't give a crap about graphics, otherwise games like Wii Sports, -Play etc. wouldn't sell like they do. And Wii wouldn't be doing like it does now, for that matter.

I really hate to point this out to you but Zelda TP was a GC game ported over to Wii not the other way around... Sry.

No Nintendo didn't kill my puppy but the Wii is overpriced for sure. I'll definately get one when the price hits $150. With the way it's selling yeah that will happen in 2017. Now if people would just stop buying trashware for a second...

  1. ::insert lame two year old ant-Wii argument here::
  2. ::insert same old pro-Wii excuse here::
  3. ::repeat step 1 for the next two years::

Go be boring somewhere else

When I read this post I thought someone had bumped a topic from a year ago. (then I realised there were no posts under it)

Mario Kart Wii is I suppose similar to older mario karts, but it is Sooooo much better, much better track design (and you get some old tracks too anyway) bikes are f-ing brilliant, the online is excellent and to be honest I don't know why people keep saying otherwise, but this is the MK that is the least based on luck compared to N64/GC versions.

SSB:B is supposedly in the same situation, it is like Melee, but so much better, more features etc. (I haven't played either game myself though so I have no more details)

Zelda is in fact a GC game, and the next Zelda (probably 2-3 years away) is, according to Nintendo, going to be a big departure from Zeldas we have seen so far.

--------

Those three are really the only games similar to old GC games really.... and even then there are a lot of differences unlike a lot of sequels (most FPS sequels are exactly the same except with different maps to run around in)

To be honest I don't see your problem, The Wii is much much more of a departure from the GC than the PS3 is from the PS2/X360 from XB

The OP is correct, mostly. If you don't like non-games like Wii Fit & Sports, there's been nothing new from Nintendo so far. Nintendo fans seem to love it though, so there's no reason for them to change.
