Forums - Sony Discussion - Potential of PS3!!! Why not PS2?

All we hear is about untapped potential of PS3. Why don't we, more importantly Sony, consider the untapped potential of PS2? It sounds weird but let's analyze the situation.

Currently PS2 has the largest userbase in the history of consoles and its worldwide sales haven't stopped yet. Though it's premature to say but Wii is well set to chase the target being given by PS2. Wii's success resulted from the following main factors:

  1. Fun based old school gaming with less horsepower and development budgets.
  2. New and simplified way of playing games i.e. wiimote.
  3. Point 2 above cracked open a whole new category of gamers i.e. moms/elder audience.
  4. Casuals...and more casuals.
  5. Excellent first party titles.
  6. Price tag around $250

Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 are considered as this generation consoles. PS3 and Xbox 360 are tagged as HD consoles and they sure have same kind of offering to usual or hardcore gamers. In fact they both are the true upgrade from previous generation with PS3 having slightly more technological advantages and consequently they are selling at a similar momentum.

Now what about PS2 which is still lingering on along with this generation systems? If we look at the titles coming on PS2, usually a port is also produced for Wii and vice versa. We all know how successfully PS2 beat Xbox despite the latter being much more superior technologically. If Wii hardware (minus wiimote) is similar to that of Xbox, then we can resume PS2 vs. Xbox (Wii) era once again. For that era PS2 will need a wiimote type of controller boxed along with Dualshock 2 controller with a price tag of around $150. Sony can make partnerships or acquisition for that matter (may be In2games) and publicly extending the PS2 lifespan (may be for further 5 years) and revising advertisement strategy (may call it "PS2 Reloaded" or "PS2 Evolved") and finally announcing new exclusive IPs for PS2 with motion-sensing controls.

This strategy will have dual effect. A new and bigger gaming market segment will evolve with PS2 and Wii which will consist of casuals/moms/elders/kids/fun with ease seekers and more importantly, with PS2 userbase, the third party titles will rapidly start to arrive on both platforms (as we know the biggest problem being faced by Wii is lack of third party support). Of course the winner is clear.

The second effect: PS3 and Xbox 360 will lead the HD gaming segment, which will clearly be declared as the other gaming segment for hardcore/real gamers. We also know PS3 has blu ray (50 gb - most probably the games will require well over 10 gb capacity within a year or so) and cell with reliability, longevity and excellent first party support, so it's easy guess who will win HD gaming segment.

Sony...your crown is laying just ahead of you...claim and wear it.

 QFT; Its way too long.

The PS2 is an ancient console. Sony is going to talk more about the PS3 because that is their platform for this current gen. I doubt the PS2 will be around past 2010, if that long, and it has already seen a ton of its potential reached. So of course you won't see much about the "potential of PS2."

PS2 has just celebrated its 8th anniversary since it was launched in Japan May 2000. PS2 is old technology and has been a classic gaming console and still continues to sell consoles and games to this day. However out with the old PS2 and in with the new PS3. PS3 has only been out for 18 months and has well another 6 or 7 years left in it to show to the world what it has to offer. PS3's best is yet to come. MGS 4 is the beginning, far from being the best the PS3 has to offer. Consoles peak in their last stages of their life when the full potential of the console is maximised.

Talking about the PS3's potential is a marketing gimmick. It's not like the system has all this secret and untapped power that hasn't yet been used. Not even hardcore PS3 fanboys buy that.

Look at the games that are doing well on the PS2 now, they are mostly casual and sports games. Many of the people who keep the console alive are the people who care least about graphics and processing power.
