Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 outsold 360 LTD in Europe

I am guessing nobody here actually followed the keynote or you would know that the 5 million figure comes from Sony's 3Q financial report It was actually stated that the numbers they were giving were up to the end of 2007 and the updated numbers would be released next week.

From Eg liveblog
"He says that next week will see proper new sales figures for hardware revealed in Tokyo, but that the end of '07 stuff they've already reported was...."

So with regards to whether or not the PS3 has outsold the 360 in EU at this time the 5 million figure (which is sold TO retail) is pretty irrelevant.

Yeah... I'd trust VGchartz before I'd believe any of the 3 companies when they are not in first place. Either way, It's only a matter of time before PS3 outsells 360 in others, especially with all those bundles SCEE has been spitting out lately.

@Saiyar: so Sony used old information for this event and will be revealing their new data next week?

Does not compute...

16:32pm: More PS3s sold than Xbox 360, despite the launch date difference. Good job, David. Graphs. It's like VG Chartz. ;)

16:31pm: He's waffling about convergence again. Numbers: 12,000,000 PSPs sold, 48,000,000 PS2s, and... 5,000,000 PS3s in Europe.

he is meaning in the same timeframe as in minus 52 weeks of sales off the 360 in the EU.

All of these figures are sold to retail not sold to consumers, hence my "not again" comment.

I have no problem with somebody stating that x amount of units have been sold (to retail) but I do have a problem with somebody telling me that because of that comment our numbers are wrong when in fact it is their misunderstanding of the figures that is the problem.

Sony are always bullish with all of their figures, we had this black friday in America we had it over christmas, we had the 1 million sold in the UK about 4-5 weeks before Chart Track announced that it had sold through 1 million. Experience tells me to take stuff like this with a pinch of salt and at the very least understand he is 1) going to say everything he can to make his company sound as good as possible (spin) and 2) reporting sold (to retail) figures.

You have to remember Sony can track PSN registrations.

It wasn't 4-5 weeks. Reeves interview was on Jan 25 (http://www.mcvuk.com/interviews/186/INTERVIEW-David-Reeves) and Chart Track was on Feb 14 (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/02/14/ps3_1m_uk_sales_figure/). So it's more like 2-3 weeks. Seems about right to me to have 2-3 weeks of stock in the shelves.

Anyway, I totally agree with you about taking this with a pinch of salt.  You should wait for next week when they announce their official numbers for the 4Q/FY2007.

Also, when can we expect a small article comparing retail/sell though numbers for the 360 (based off their latest earnings report)? There is no way the 360 reduced their retail stock by so much in a single quarter (from 1.6M to 800k or so). We need your wisdom, please do a small article about it and the necessary adjustments to the 360, it's clearly over tracked a lot. Even if we put in the "shortages" there were never shortages WW, even in NA the shortages were regional.

Please consider doing a small article about 360 retail/sell through like you did for Nintendo. We as VGC users deserve it. Can't be all about Nintendo, right? We also need 360, PS3 and PSP articles every quarter

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

Whoever lifted my unfair ban thank you. It seems that ioi's argument is that Sony has tons of PS3's on shelves and 360 is sold out? Yea ok your site i guess you can say whatever you want.

VGC Europe Numbers

PS3 4.5 Mil (+200k ish for this week =4.7 Mil)
5 Mil shipped seem spot on

X360 4.8 Mil (+150k ish for this week = just short of 5 Mil
Maybe slightly overtracked, but not by much.

I'd say, this is a pretty fair assessment.  I'd agree.

I think that Sony would announce this the MINUTE it occured. (I would)...which would mean they're actually about dead even overall.  (Which is what I think most would agree with).

I don't see any problem here because:

-VGC numbers are very close to this guy's numbers. Not far from an understandable margin of error.
-Shipped vs sold. They're talking about completely different numbers than what VGC tracks.
-Sony has a history with "conveniently rounded" numbers.

Btw, I hadn't noticed the situation was so close in Europe. What exactly is this Other in Others that has 1M 360s, but only 500k PS3s sold?
