Seems like a good strategy. Release a smaller version of a famous IP on smartphone and follow it up with a mainline entry on their own systems. Didn't work out too well for Super Mario Run (shouldn't have priced it more than 2.99) but they have gone to f2p since then with Fire Emblem and now Animal Crossing. Not a fan of f2p at all but apparently they did it where it doesn't hinder gameplay too much so one isn't "forced" to feel obligated to spend money.
