XBO having just about half the number of retail sales that PS4 does with half the instal base is interesting.
I'd figure the difference would be a bit more than just 5 million, considering PS4 has notably more quality games (according to Metacritic) than XBO.

Yeah Wii finished last place last gen.  Which is a fact not many are aware of.

Yeah, that's an interesting fact. Especially if you consider digital sales, Wii would be very far from PS3 and X360.

Don't forget that attach ratio is expected to be higher when HW total is lower.

Also that Xbox is commonly expected to have fewer high seller, but that they sell more each. Meaning, PS4 as being more widespread because of more variety.

June 2017:

"PS4 has cumulatively sold through more than 60.4 million units to consumers worldwide as of June 11, 2017"

"PS4 software sales, led by critically acclaimed titles such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, also remain strong with more than 487.8 million copies*2 sold at retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation™Store as of June 11"  - Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Its doing like 14-15m in software sales avg pr month atm? in the first half of the year... not bad.

It's too bad we can't compare all time physical/digital sales, to get a more accurate look at how the current systems software sales are doing compared to their predecessors.

http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/01/ps4_software_sales_exceed_400_million_console_sales_reach_53_4_million

"Interestingly, both the PlayStation 2 and the Wii – the two best-selling consoles of all time – sold less games when they hit 50 million hardware sales: 308 million and 353 million game sales respectively."  - pushsquare.com

Well, that info helps sort thing s out a fair amount, so thanks.

Amazing numbers, does anyone know how others were doing at this point of their lives?

Using VGC data, ordered best to worst, percentage in brackets is how much of it's LTD software sales the figure represents, so lower percentage means longer legs.

Wii:  510.7m (52.8%)
PS4: 400.6m (100%)
PS3: 277.5m (28.4%)
DS: 275.7m (32.6%)
360:  237m  (23.5%)
XBO: 195.8m (100%)
3DS: 153.2m  (52.2%)
PSP: 115.6m  (37.9%)
Wii U : 78.3m  (82.92%)
Vita: 40.1m  (59.2%)

Dates Used

PS4: 15th November 2013 to 15th July 2017, (1338 days)
XBO: 22nd November 2013 to 15th July 2017, (1331 days)
PS3: 11th November 2006 to 10th July 2010 (1337 days)
360: 22nd November 2005 to 25th July 2009 (1341 days)
Wii: 19th November 2006 to 17th July 2010 (1336 days)
DS: 21st November 2004 to 26th July 2008 (1343 days)
PSP: 12th December 2004 to 16th August 2008 (1343 days)
3DS: 26th February 2011 to 1st November 2014 (1344 days
Wii U : 18th November 2012 to 23rd July 2016 (1343 days)
Vita: December 17th 2011 to 22nd August 2015 (1344 days)

So factoring digital it's up there with the wii and we all know how much of a boom the first half of the gen wii was.

But's it's so far ahead of ps3, ds and 360 it's ridiculous. Sony will surely top 1BN in software this gen no problem.
