Japanese Sales Charts: Monster Hunter Makes a Peach Beach Splash

Beast mode

There are no surprises in this week's Media Create chart as Nintendo 3DS exclusive Monster Hunter XX topped the software charts with a frightening debut of almost 850k units. We wonder whether Capcom will use the success as a means to justify another couple of years of PlayStation Portable assets, or whether it's panicking over the fact that the Nintendo Switch is going to force it into upgrading the series' visuals at last.

PlayStation 4 continued its steady start to the year, selling another 34k units or so cumulatively between models. It was buoyed by the release of sexy Splatoon-esque third-person shooter Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash, which moved a reasonable 53k units in total. Elsewhere, Horizon: Zero Dawn's still clinging on to the top ten, with its life-to-date sales now nearing 200k units – a very good number for Guerrilla Games.

50k for Peach Beach Splash. Is that good? Title might not have a terribly high budget...

Even though MH XX is an old game with a small number of updates, sales are bad and show that the 3DS reaches it's end of life. It really needs a successor, like the Switch mini which is hopefully coming soon.

I also wonder if the bad PS4 Pro sales compared to standard PS4 are due to stock issues like in Europe. Otherwise it shows how important price is and how heavily overpriced the Switch is compared to it's full sales potential.

Monster Hunter HD on Switch plz. And look at the Switch sell through numbers. If that keeps up every week for the rest of the year that will be 2 million more units on top of the current base. Wow

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

The previous Senran Kagura game, Estival Versus, did 46k first week on Vita and 29k first week on PS4. So Peach Beach Splash did more than either the Vita or PS4 version of Estival Versus, but less than both of them combined. Considering they reused alot of Estival Versus assets for Peach Beach Splash, I'm fairly certain it will be profitable for them, especially after the planned western release, which will be cheap since they don't do English dubs, they only have to pay a translator to subtitle it.

Oh, seems devs are set to make a nice coin off of this title then. Wonder if a Switch port might be possible.

I'm locking this, please continue the discussion here : http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=227006&page=1
