There are cases for both.

The Wii U had a larger percentage of exclusives to 3rd party games, yet floundered.
The Xbox One had a larger percentage of 3rd party games to exclusives, yet has floundered.

The Wii had a large percentage of exclusives to 3rd party games and was a massive success.
The Xbox 360 had a large percentage of 3rd party games and was also a massive success.

I think the platforms brand image is likely a larger contributer to a platforms success than how much exclusives or 3rd party's that may/may not exist, Halo helped with that brand image that made the Xbox 360 a success. It was the platforms Mascot.

So it always baffles me when people try to pass off that a platform is dead because it lacks exclusives or 3rd party's.

But denying that having good exclusives or 3rd party is important to build the userbase is wrong as well
