Forums - Politics Discussion - If America forced immigrants to totally adopt our lifestyle would they still come here?

immigrants are expected to come to a new culture/country and EMBRACE the beliefs and laws as far as freedoms and government. Not necessarily adopt a flavor in music or a religious opinion.

The problem is when someone immigrates to, say, America and they try to enforce their own beliefs that differ from the American Constitution or local laws. I.e. an extremist from the Middle East who comes to America and is unwilling to accept the fact that here women are allowed to show their faces and have RIGHTS and that husbands can't just beat their wives because of some sort of backwards ancient custom

think about it like this - in America it is considered polite to learn basic expressions when going to a foreign country. we make an effort to communicate with them even if its just like a week or a few days. so if they are immigrating to the country, they should be expected to learn the country's most common language

domestic violence is a serious problem, but America hasn't even worked out how to prevent it even in non immigrants yet. extremists are a very tiny minority of all societies, sadly no matter what anybody does they will continue to exist and treating any large population based on the behaviour of a tiny minority is how extremists grow in number, we would be appalled if other countries treated every one of us like we were all KKK members. American culture (like Australia where I am) is supposed to be an open one of freedom of beliefs, you need to accept the laws but your beliefs are your own and none of the business of the government or society at large.  I personally dislike all religions as being little more than brainwashing people into obedience but I would never question anyone right to their beliefs.

Wow, seems you've rallied everyone against you, Spurg.

Okay then, how about we just say something as simple as learning the official language. Is that okay? I mean, there are people who are here for like 20+ years and it's very inconvenient when lines form because there's a language barrier. Can we do that? Can we get everyone that's like 5+ years in America some help speaking the language? Or is that too offensive for people?
