Forums - General Discussion - First Look - Test Footage of Star Trek's U.S.S. Discovery

The name of the newest Star Trek television series is Star Trek: Discovery, with the show's main ship called the U.S.S. Discovery.

I know what you're thinking. "That ship design looks terrible" and "The CGI from Star Citizen looks better!"

Actually, this was a Enterprise design for Star Trek: Phase II

On the other hand, The U.S.S. Discovery Class looks like this.

These pics was taken from STO.

I'm not particularly concerned one way or another about the ship design... but the series name gives me hope. "Discovery" would be a poor name for a Starfleet ship that isn't exploring strange new worlds, seeking out new life and new civilisations, and boldly going where no-one has gone before. I don't want a space soap opera, I don't want a space western, and I don't want a space action flick. They need to get back to the TOS/TNG formula, even if it incorporates more multi-episodic arc elements.

Have you considered the possibility that it's MEANT to feel more Klingon? Maybe Discovery is going to be a ship that has a stronger Klingon presence?

That's unlikely. Look at the registry number, NCC 1031. TOS Enterprise was NCC 1701, which means this series is pre TOS, which means Starfleet and the Klingons aren't allies at this point in time.

Except, the "NCC" numbers may not be chronological (there are some that are very out-of-place if they're chronological). Indeed, it appears that, while they typically use a chronological process, there are exceptions where names or designs are callbacks. The Heart of Gold was a TNG-era ship with NCC-42, and the Sherlock Holmes was a TNG-era ship with NCC-221B (no kidding). The original Space Shuttle Discovery was OV-103. NCC-1031 is clearly a callback.

I really do not think this is the final design of the ship. What was shown in the test flight footage was a Ralph McQuarrie's concept design from the 70's that did not make the cut.

With holding judgment, but that ship design and overall technical appearance feels below 2017 standards.

Not that it matters given I can still go back and watch TNG and enjoy it due to strong writing and characters. My main concern is people saying it is a successor to Enterprise as opposed to TNG that I've been wanting since I was a kid. (Yes, Voyager and DS9 had good episodes and I am fine with them, but I want a true third generation of Star Trek).
